blue 44 vs. stainless
Howdy from Texas! I've owned a number of blued 29 Smiths over the last 25 years or so, and I've also owned a few stainless 629's. I currently own a 629 snub. However, I love the look of a blued Smith. What I'm wondering is: If I decide to try and get another blued 29, will I lose my shirt on my stainless 629 snub? Do the blued Smiths bring a premium price, or does it just depend on the individual's preferences? I've always liked the way stainless resisted rust, but, the way I baby my guns, I've never had a blued rust either. Really would like to know, as I keep being drawn back to blued Smiths. RAM- thanks for the info. I just spoke with the company, and it sounds like an ideal solution. They tell me Dura-Kote can be clear coated to resemble brite blue, and be much more durable also. Exactly what I desire in a carry gun. Thanks loads for the info! Barry L. 0 -

Glad to be of service. I'm certainly NO EXPERT so I hesitate to ever post here, except to ask questions myself, but I've been reading up on this Dura-Kote stuff and it looks like the "real deal." I plan on trying some on a couple of BORING guns in my collection.
Keep me posted on your progress with the 629...one of favorites, too. I just a couple of years ago bought my first one--a Performance Center piece (see photo below) and I killed my FIRST DEER EVER with it last December.

You go right ahead and stick with your wheel guns! You're absolutely right, they NEVER go out of style! I would be very interested in knowing how your Dura Coat project 629 project goes. I was looking in the Lauer site's FAQs but didn't see anything specifically mentioning using it on stainless. While I don't imagine it would be a problem, I'd sure be interested to know how it comes out. Are you planning on "clear coating" it as you mentioned, to get a gloss blue finish? If so, what will be used for the clear coat? I too have a 629 I might be interested in making look like a blued gun.0 -
Horseman - I was told by the company that by clearcoating they can produce a perfect copy of polished blue. They guarantee that the Dura-Cote and the clear coat they apply over it are impervious to corrosion, chipping, and holster wear, PROVIDED they apply it, as that is the only way they can ensure it is applied correctly. They tell me that the metal has to be cleaned and degreased thoroughly to insure that the new finish bonds. As far as Stainless, they assure me that it will bond to stainless just as permanently as carbon steel. One drawback is that for this company to apply this finish will cost $200.00 on a stainless Smith N frame. Also, the firearm must be disassembled when they receive it. If they have to take it apart, the price will be another $100! Some things to consider, but, I will likely disassemble the gun and have it coated anyway. I'm also bobbing the hammer and porting it.
