Rem 700 vssf vrs Savage 12bvss
I have a chance to buy a Rem 700 vssf used in excellent condition (looks to me) or a savage 12bvss new. Both for $535 at local shop. Which one should I jump on? Both in varmit caliber 22-250.

Both rifles are good guns. While I haven't shot it, I've heard the accu-trigger is great. However, I just preferred the feel, balance, finish and looks of the Remington, so that's what I went with. $535 is a good price for a used VSSF, but either gun will be a shooter in my opinion. Just try to decide which one feels better in your hands. 0 -
Go with the Remington. They're made better, by far. Smoother action, more attractive, and the trigger is adjustable too, but it'd be better if a gunsmith or somebody competent did the adjusting. I don't see the accu-trigger having enough merit to warrant buying it over a Remington. 0 -
I'm a rem700 fan, so that's my vote. My VSSF 220swift has gone 1/4moa many times with factory ammunition.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

I had to make a similar choice a couple years back - with the exact same choices. Only difference was that I was considering both new. I went with the Savage 12BVSS, and would definitely do it again - in a heartbeat!! Give the Savage a real hard look, and don't sell it short.
I'll admit your average Savage isn't much to look at, however the 12BVSS, with its laminate stock, nice black metal end cap, and SS fluted barrel is an absolute beauty. Every time I go, she's easily one of the best lookin rifles at the range.
Additionally, you've also got the following reasons... (1)the Savage is actally still made here in the USA, (2)the rifling process for the Savage is technically better than that for the Remi, (3)the then new Accutrigger is superb - easily still one of the best out-of-the-box, adjustable triggers available, (4)traditional out of the box Savage accuracy, and finally, (5)new is always better than used - at least when it comes to firearms.
Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the Remi is a bad gun by any means. Nor am I saying that the Remi is the "wrong" choice. You'll probably be happy with either. I just think the Savage in this case is the better choice.

Ive got almost the same remington, 223, and its a solid ground squirrel shooter. Ive shot the savage too, also a good shooter. I thought the trigger was a little better on the savage, ive got mine set real light. Either one is going to be a tack driver by most peoples standards. I've recomended both to people, Savage shuold be a little less than Remington (new prices), or even a New England/H&R if a guys really on a budget. 0 -
Remington, great gun and proven better resale value and the H&S stock is one of the best out. 0 -
I bought the Savage 12FV in 22-250 two years ago. Price was not the primary consideration. The Accu-trigger works well. I have not regretted this purchase.
New vs Used Rifles: Unless you give the used rifle a genuine range test, you have no way of knowing how much and how rapidly the bore has been used/abused. Bore life is finite, as I am sure you know. Two rifles chambered for the same cartridge and set up for the same purposes, both with good accuracy reported? A no brainer. Go new every time.
Savage has gone a long way in building a reputation for fine, out of the box accuracy. The price is reflected in the "not as pretty as Remington" looks. If looks are not a prime consideration, then again, go with the new Savage. Remington has it's own set of shortcomings, but has always been competitive.
