Why so many 'refurbished' Nikons?
I've noticed that there are alot of 'refurbished' Nikon scopes on the market, both Buckmaster and Monarch series. The refurbished scopes come with a full factory warranty. What has been failing on these scopes, in general? Internal seals? Internal parts moving around after gun recoil? or just what? Many thanks in advance to 'those in the know'.

I'm NOT in the know, but...
If it's anything like the computer industry, then all is not what it seems. The analogy is as follows:
Nikon or IBM make a certain product and ship it to various vendors on consignment. In the case of IBM they often sell to their own lease arm, but I'm not aware of Nikon having that arrangement.
Without naming names, let's just say Cabela's happens to be on the vendor list and they accept a good number of these scopes. They sell a bunch, a very few are returned for various reasons, yet after 3 months there still happens to be an inventory of these items and they're returned to Nikon because Cabela's don't wish to take a loss.
Nikon might re-certify the few returned items, but they have largely new second-inventory stock which the have to move. It's fire sale time!
Your "new" scope will probably be one model behind current, but will have never been out of the box. Thus, a new product with a new warranty at an attractive price.
With a name like Nikon I wouldn't worry.

Another possibility is that they are "blemished" scopes rejected by quality control for purely cosmetic reasons, touched up and offered at low prices. As Nord says, it is Nikon, with full warrenty, there is little worry. In fact, if you are scared off, just point me at your source... 0 -

I was placing an order with Natchez Shooters Supply and asked about the refurbished Nikons they were advertising. The Natchez rep said that Nikon wasn't backing the refurbished scopes and because they were not going to sell them anymore. He went on to say that they had gotten about 1/4 of the batch returned to them and when they tried to send them back to Nikon they were told no. I personally bought a pair of new Nikon ATB binocs and found that all the waranty they came with was a 25yr limited to manufactures defect, if you have the proper info on file with them. I believe that this is the same waranty that they give on their scopes. He!! Simmons does better then that. 0 -
The latest Nikon refurbs that I stumbled across were at midsouthshootersshupply (this past weekend), both Buckmasters and Monarchs. But I have also seen them regularly advertised as refurbs when snooping through my local gun dealers stash of dealer/wholesaler flyers and catalogs. The quantities seem to be large, (more like excess inventory as mentioned earlier in thread). I have also seen them advertised on Ebay. I am aware that Nikon has a great reputation and a good solid guarantee, but it is only valid for the original purchaser (and you had better hang onto that special orange and black warranty tag that comes with the scope as well as your original receipt, or else...), unlike Leupold, where the guarantee is for the life of the scope, regardless of present owner. I just thought that there was some major manufacturing problem that there were so many of these refurbished Nikons surfacing, as I never run across ads for refurbished Leupolds or refurbished Burris scopes. 0 -
I have a Monarch which is a fine scope, but I must admit I like Burris and their one word guarantee: "Forever." 0 -
