    Yes, it is just brass, or just brass and plastic in the case of shot shells. That is, provided they are empty shells, unprimed AND unloaded.

    Brass, bullets, hulls (shotgun) and dummy (no primer or powder) rounds can be shipped via the US mail.
    Primers, powder, primed brass/hulls and loaded ammo can not be shipped via the mail.

    Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.

    Another rule set down by people FAR from knowledgeable about such things.I asked a POSTMASTER why..was told it had to do with the danger in flying..DUH.........I then asked if he had ever heard of fighter planes or bombers carrying bombs and ammo.That threw him into a frenzy........said he'd find out for me.Never did.Just another example of laws that have NO sound basis..I heard of a guy who constantly sends ammo through the mail.Lets see,,what was his name again??Darned if I can remember..

    modoc, the prohibition against live items in the mail also is because of the possibility of it being "scrunched" by some equipment and going off. Then there is the view of older rounds w/ BP being mini bombs just waiting to explode . . . . Y, I know . . . . Idiots!

    HOWEVER
    If you know someone who sends live ammo through the mail as a regular thing, you would be doing him a great service in urging him not to do so. I know of at least one individual who had the Postal Inspectors swoop down, along w/ ATF and all sorts of other jack-booted types and haul away *everything* he had remotely related to shooting - cartridge collection, firearms, etc. until he proved that he was not responsible for the live crap which arrived in the mail. This was the second time it had happened. The first time, the PM was at hand to control things because he knew the recipient. The second time the ignorant carrier freaked & went directly to the Gestapo. All his stuff was returned, but only after every single piece was etched with an evidence number which basically destroyed most of its collector value. Not so much as an apology from the Gestapo, either. If he had been the one who *sent* it? Free vacation at the Graybar Hotel . . . the regs governing firearms & ammunition items may be completely ridiculous (and most of them obviously are), but they are seriously enforced and one flaunts them at his own risk. I would be more willing to sodomize a hedge hog than ship any sort of live ammunition item by mail. My $0.02.

    I'm not an expert, but i did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.

    Safer than playing with venomous reptiles for fun and profit, though!

    Actually, I made that one up at least thirty years ago to verbalize the concept of the ultimate in unpleasant alternatives . . . still seems pretty good.

    Heaven forbid detonation of YOUR mail should break any of THEIR equipment instead of vice versa.

    Your mail flys on passenger planes, for this reason FAA rules forbid any explosive or corrosive material from being in the mail, this also includs bleach and soaps. Just think if any of your family is on a plane that crash's do you want ammo on the plane with them?
