.300 whisper
does anyone have some experience /w this cartridge? i am wondering abot it's perfomance in the hunting mode. on paper, compared to like a 30/30, it looks kinda iffy on medium deer from a t/c pistol, 12 inch bbl. was thinking about a 125 sierra at about 1800 fps,100 yds max.i think it will do well but would like to see if anyone has tried this.thanks all.

Is this the same round as the .300 fireball? Can someone show a pic of both or at least explain the difference between the two. I know that the .300 whisper is a 5.56 case make for the .30 bullet. Not too sure about the fireball. Heard a lot about the ballistics from both from the Ar forum but have no idea what they look like. Thanks

The 300 Whisper is formed from the 221 Rem. Fireball case. The cases can be made from a 223 case, but your are cutting the case down and forming it into a 221 Fireball. You then neck the case up to 30 cal. 0 -

The 300 Whisper, 300 Fireball and the 300/221 Fireball are all the same basic cartridge. JD Jones, owner of SSK Industries, has a trademark on the name '300 Whisper' which prevents other manufacturers from using that nomenclature. Technically, only JD Jones can produce anything that says '300 Whisper' on it. To get around that lock on the cartridge, others started producing the same thing with a different name.
This can turn into a fairly expensive project once you get everything ordered that you need if you stick with the 300 Whisper name. But there are ways of reducing the cost somewhat if you work at it. Be aware that this cartridge is designed to fire subsonic ammunition with a suppressor using the 240 gr. Sierra MatchKing at subsonic velocities. This means that the barrel you get should be an 8" twist in order to stabilize this huge bullet at those velocities. There is lots of information on the web if you do a search on '300 Whisper'.

DIES REQUIRED :
My preference in dies is usually RCBS but I found that Midway USA sells 300/221 Fireball dies as a group D die set while RCBS would require a custom die order at a significantly higher price. I elected to get Redding's Deluxe 3 die set what includes the full length size, neck size, and seat dies.
The image above is from Redding's current catalog but the 300/221 dies come in the same type of box, a 7mm AND 30 caliber tapered resize buttons, allen wrench, and a spare decaping pin. In summary, everything needed except the shell holder and the equipment needed for any other cartridge.
The tapered size buttons make forming 300/221 brass extremely simple and once the 300/221 brass is formed it doesn't need to be done again.
BRASS REQUIRED:
Cases for the 300/221 Remington can be made by necking and reforming 221 brass. It is desirable to use new unfired brass for forming. As it has not yet been work hardened by repeated firings, it is softer and easier to form.
There is always a potential problem when case forming from one caliber down to another. You should be aware of this problem and its potential dangers. Reaming or neck turning of the case necks may be necessary in order to produce cases that will chamber and function safely.
SEQUENCE:
Preliminary size using the standard 300/221 Remington F.L. Die with the 7MM tapered size button installed.
Final size using the standard 300/221 Remington F.L. Die with the original 30 caliber tapered size button installed.

nononsense hit it right on the money. I have a .300 fireball upper for my AR-15 and a .300 whisper barrel for my T/C Carbine and I load for both using Redding .300 fireball dies. You could take the difference in the two, poke yourself in the eye with it and never feel it. Thats how close they are.
