Assuming price were no object, what is the best semi auto 7.62 NATO rifle? M1A? FN FAL? HK G3? What?
In the real world I inhabit, price is an object. With a ceiling of $500 or thereabouts, what is the best I can get at that price?

well, i will say for $500, none of the above. probably a CETME is the only thing you will get for under $500.

well, it really depends on how much actual labor you want to put into the gun. you pretty much have to TOTALLY take them apart and clean them. work the bolt a couple hundred times. i had one and it was a fun gun and they shoot real well. scroll back through some old posts and you will find one of the expert answers to the questions you just asked. i have seen it on here a couple times.

Have you considered any MAS 49/56 .308 conversions? I've heard good and bad on them, but the price hovers around $500 or so.
Of course, the FAL and G3 are gonna be mucho illegal in California...[:(]0 -
I'd look for a used FAL or consider building one. I think South African kits are still out there and or STG kits although they are dwindling. Somewhere I have a link for an outfit that sold me Imbel receivers pretty cheap, I'm thinking $229 plus shipping. I have my kits destubbed (easy with a die grinder) and both barrels look like new (16 1/2" STG 58 from Centerfiresystems.com.).
I have a CETME and wish I hadn't bought it. It is fun to shoot but don't plan on reloading any brass out of it. The FAL makes it look like a Mattel toy. Lousy sights too and switching to HK type is a fairly big job, requiring milling the paddle sight off. Scope mounts for either are touch and go, FAL (mine anyhow) is just a receiver dust cover with a weaver rail riveted on. The Stanag type mount I bought for the CETME required filing to fit the receiver lugs as my receiver is cast stainless. Century CETME's have at least three types of receivers, stamped steel, stamped stainless and cast stainless, I'm told they had problems with the stamped ones.
From what I've seen, at $500 the only thing you'll find built is CETME or Saiga. Figure at least a grand for an M1A used and my STG's will come in around $600 after compliance parts.

There are no IMBEL receiver left anywhere south of the $300 mark. They are now prohibited from importation like the barrels are.

id check around for a saiga,...basically its a AK with a hunting stock,..but you can convert it to look like a AK if you want.
dont forget to look in pawn shops0 -
i wouldnt go with the mas converted to 308 had one for a while kept ripping the back half of the cassing off... had a heck of a time getting the rest of the shell out... had to start hand loading soft loads for it... got rid of it...if money is of a issue the new cetme arent that bad for the money had to run couple hundred rounds through mine to brake it in but hey thats half the fun... would rather have a fal but cetme are bad for the price 0
