Rem 788 Magazine Conversion?
Rem 788 enthusiasts know how difficult it can be to keep your external mags, purchase new mags if lost, and to keep the mags from rattling in the woods. I want to do away with the problem by removing the removable external mag and installing an internal mag, like from a Rem 600, 660, or 700 ADL.
Any of you fine gunsmiths willing to take on a project challenge to put an internal mag in a Rem 788 in 308, 243, 7mm-08, or 6mm first, then move on the other calibers if feasible? If you have the skills I have the money for the project. I can get a fellow to fabricate a new 788 floor plate without the external mag cutout, then we can experiment with different internal mag setups from different models.

The 788 Rem. reciever is designed for the magazine. The feed rails as in a 700 are not there. You could probably fit a 700 magazine and trigger guard with a little effort but altering the frame and rails would be expensive and a hair pulling exercise in my opinion.
You can still get the mags in most calibers and as the 788 is a fine, accurate, inexpensive rifle as is, I would leave it alone. It holds as many rounds as most any sporter and I dont know what you hunt that would need so many spare mags or extra rounds.0 -

Possible? Sure, anything is with enough time and money. But I stress "possible", it's not probable.
Practical? Absolutely not. As D.S. Cole tried to state below, The 788 (not 700) is made without the feed rails that are normally present in the standard 700 models. The magazine is required to allow the cartridges to feed correctly since the feed lips are incorporated in it. This is part of what originally made the 788 so inexpensive to manufacture and purchase.
In my opinion, it is entirely impractical to even pursue this type of project. Reason? A Rem. 700 ADL or any one of several ADL style receivers can be purchased new for about $350.00 or less from some sources. It will function and feed right from the factory and be all of the things that you ask for above. Walk into a store, pay your money, do the 4473 and walk out with exactly what you need.
Trying to modify a 788 to be what you ask for will cost a lot more money and probably won't even function once its finished. Now you've just ruined a 788 receiver and you still don't have what you want.

Same advice, basically. Buy a 700 SA BDL, sell the bottom metal complete for $70.00, then buy an HS Precision DM and the 10 round magazines to fit. These magazines are only available in Short Action.
Or check with Numerich Arms and see if they still have the Mauser 20 round "trench" magazines. Buy a good used Mauser and off you go.

It does make me wonder if it would be possable to remove the protruding portion of the clip and finish it off smooth with the stock to in effect make it a blind magazine. Not real sure how well it would work for loading from the top though.0 -

I didn't misunderstand him at all. Please read my post, the upper portion which addresses the question of the 788 being converted to an ADL style receiver. I just didn't put his handle on the top. I'll change that now.
It's not a good idea, I said as much, then explained why.

The ejection port on a 788 is much too small. It is hard enough loading a single into the chamber, not to mention trying to load a mag through the top.
