LC Smith original?

Hi, I am looking at a side by side 12 gauge, on the left and right side of receiver it shows L.C. SMITH It also has a hammer on both sides, on the iniside of the receiver after i take off the barrels it shows PAT D MAR 29, 83, the other side shows a serial number of 77XXXF. this number is also on the forearm and where the lever is under the barrels. The left barrel says HUNTER ARMS CO. MAKERS FULTON N.Y. Is this an original LC SMith? There is about half the case coloring showing on the receiver, and about 90% of the bluing onbarrels. wood is very good, and there is a plastic buttplate with REMINGTON ARMS CO> The stock is in good shape, with most of the checkering worn off. If this is original, or not, can anyone give me an idea of its worth? thanks,dave

    Hello Dave,

    What you have is a Field grade LC Smith that was manufactured circa 1899, and it does not have its original buttplate. I suspect that the barrels are of damascus construction (based on when it was made and the fact that it is a hammer gun). I also suspect that either the stock is not original, or the metal parts have been refinished. It is very odd to find an original gun with 50% of the original case colors, but with well worn stocks (as evidenced by the checkering being in poor condition). For what it is worth, stocks with the checkering worn off are not considered to be in "good shape"... "fair" condition or "poor" condition is more accurate.

    As for the value, if it actually has damascus tubes, it is a $200 gun in the condition you describe. If it has fluid steel tubes, it might be worth $350... as a shooter.
