I have recently obtained a Winchester Repeating Arms Shotgun
Model 1897 12 Ga.Mod would anyone be able to help me as to the worth of this piece, it is in excellent condition.

    Hello Leonard...

    We first need to know when it was manufactured (the serial number will tell us that). Next, we need to know which specific variant it is (e.g. Field Grade, Trap Gun, Brush Gun, etc.). Next comes the frame type (solid or takedown), then the barrel length and choke marking. Does it still have the factory buttplate, or has a recoil pad been added? Finally, what percentage of the original factory finish remains on the frame, the barrel, and the stocks? What condition is the bore in?

    the seriel # is E706090, the specific variant is field grade.
    It is a solid frame type, the barrel length is 27 inches the choke marking is MOD it still has the factory buttplate,there is 90% factory finish on the frame and barrel and 100% on the stock, the bore condition is excellent.

    Hello Leonard,

    There are some things that are not adding up... the serial number indicates that it was manufactured circa 1922 - 1924, and as such, it "should" be a Model 97 Takedown.

    (1) Is it marked "MODEL 1897" and if so, where?

    (2) Are you sure that it is a solid frame gun? Is the serial number marked twice or just once?

    (3) The barrel length you list is incorrect for a Model 1897 or a Model 97... odd inch lengths were never used. Listed barrel lengths for the Model 1897/97 Field grade guns are 32, 30, 28, and 26 inches. What I suspect, is that the barrel on your gun is actually 28-inches long (which includes the portion of the barrel screwed into the frame on a solid frame gun, or the total length with the takedown extension).

    Dang it Bert,guess I'm not a real man.When I went into the USMC,they handed me a M1 Garand.........Gee that makes me feel bad.Oh well..

    Hello Modoc...

    I served nearly 21 years in the U.S. Navy (submarine service), and I always knew that you jarheads were a little on the "sensitive" side. That said, my signature line simply refers to the MEN who hunt game for sport... not military applications.
