which to avoid?

i'm thinking about picking up either an ak47 or an SKS with my birthday money, now the problem comes in that, i dont know which types would be the best quality, i've heard that all the norinco brands are crap, is this true? are there any others to avoid?

    I just got back from the range today oh about 4 hours ago. I use a Romanian SAR-1 and have put about 3k rounds thru it and havn't had a problem yet. Most Ak variants are all within reason the same quality. http://www.ak-47.us/ here is a site that tell the difference.

    for what reason do u want an AK? they arent real good for hunting, they arent the most accurate rifle, and depending on which state ur in u might find getting things, such as magazines, can be hard. my state, if i want a hi capacity magazine(10 rounds or above) it has to be preban to my understanding. if ur looking for something fun in the 300 dollar price range, why dont u get something like this http://gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=35063704
    but if u really want an AK i heard yugoslavian ones are good. and dont get in trouble with it

    Both the SKS and the AK 47/74 are good rifles for there original intended purposes and both are very reliable what do YOU want to do with them is the question???? Target rifles there not. but just for fun shooting there great and No the china made Norinco rifles are just as good as the yugo's, romanian,albanina,and russian made ones but the russian guns are a bit better in the overall finish and fit so its you call depending on your needs.....

    I've owned, shot and worked on AKs and SKS of several different manufactures. They all were reliable and always went bang. The top of the line in AKs are, IMHO, the Bulgarian milled rifles which are also comparatively expensive. Older norincos are just as good as anything else, both AK & SKS. The 7.62x39 cartridge was designed to do a good job of maiming and sometimes killing people in the 150 to 200lb range. Some folks are using the round for hunting smaller deer, but I expect that many animals are wounded for every outright kill that we hear about. The SKS is a very fine cyote rifle if the range is kept reasonable. And as we all seem to agree on they are fun to bang away with, as long as we don't expect too much.

    yeah keep an eye out for a milled or stamped reciever. the milled are more expensive and as far a I can tell not much superior

    Norinco sks/ak brands = crap??
    No way. But hey maybe that thinking will drive the prices down.

    Back almost twenty years ago norinco was not very popular, and was downplayed a lot, but they have proven themselves time and time again, I would love to have a norinco under folder

    I have both a sks and a AK47 I prefer the AK47 over the sks. I get good results out of both but the AK47 feels a lot better to me than the sks. It has fewer parts and you can get more accesories. And in the great state of Tennesseee you can get any kind of magazine you want and real cheap to. I got "8" 30 round mages for $6.99 each at a local gun store. a 75 round drum for $60 and a 40 rounder for 12.00.
    I do a lot of shooting with my AK i have never had any problems from it and its pretty accurate ( 2" groups @ 100 yards)
    So i would pick the AK47.
