Winchester Model 42
Hello to all. I am new to the forum and would appreciate some help from the experts on a Model 42. This is a fairly nice shotgun with a 26 inch barrel marked "full". The strange thing to me is it has a full length ventilated rib. By full length the rib extends all the way from the tip of the muzzel accross the receiver to the small extention at the rear of the receiver. The rib is really well done. How about it?

Since none of us here on the Experts forum can personally see or handle your Model 42 to determine what the real problem is, it would be foolish og us to tell you exactly what is wrong with it. I highly recommend taking it to a qualified 'smith (so that he can make a living too)[:)]

Could be the shell latch (or stop) is broken, bent, or missing. Just my 2 cents worth.

Hello Idaho G: Well since there is only one part that holds the shell in the magazine tube, Winchester Part # 3342 the cartridge cuttoff. I'll guess it's missing or worn out, (could be bent). Just sold one to a guy who got a real good deal on his Md 42. The only problem is that's about the first piece to go into the receiver when assembling it. A few things have to come out to get to it. As Bert said take it to a "Qualified" gunsmith, a Md 42 can be screwed up real quick buy someone not familar with the internals, or mechanically inclined. If the cartridge cuttoff needs replacing it should cost about $15-$25. depending on who you find that has them. Installation is another estimate of about 1/2 hour. Good Luck
