30.06 alternative continued ( was locked out)
Thanks for the suggestions in my previous posts.
I've checked out the remington Ballistics pages and am down to the 25-06 or 7mm-08. They seem to have best ammo selection. While the .270win has a great range, ballisticly, I'm not sure it's what I want.
Now, as for rifles? Hmm, rem mod 7 looks intersting. I looked at a Ruger M77 MKII All-Weather in the synthetic/SS barrel config. About 7lbs.
Course, I keep looking at the Browning BAR Safari in .25-06 at 7.5 lbs.
I'd like to stay under 7lbs and haven't found many without going to a short (16"or so)barrel which I don't care to do.
Someone mentioned a Browning Medallion, I can't find such a gun. Did find a gunsafe with that name.
6.5x55 swede only comes in 140gr factory loads, Kinda rules out the small game hunt, or so it appears to me.
I dont' expect to find a perfect gun for everything, but would like something more all around that is between my .22 and my .30/30. The 30.06 I have is way to heavy for me in my current hunts.

You can't go wrong with the Rem mdl 7 in 7mm-08, though you might want to look at their mountain rifle, it is suposed to be lighter still. For a 25-06 you might want to look thru the custom rifles offered on the gb aution site. I would bet that there have been more custom 25-06s built, over the years, then production ones. 0 -
Nothing wrong at all with a Browning safari 25-06. Very nice gun. 0 -
i like the 673 guide guns over the m7. plus they have it in the 350 rem mag and that is a real deerslayer. also the 6.5 rem mag is a nice catridge made in this gun. they are ugly and that is the only reason i don't own one.

My 2 cents. Savage has a new lightweight 7mm08 with the accu-trigger,it's what I'm getting this year to replace my venerable old '06. You can spend lots more than the Savage costs but I'll bet I can shoot it as well as any stock rifle you choose, the accu-trigger is great and the 7mm08 shoots beautifully. Good luck 0 -
Weatherby has a line of guns that come in at 6 to 6.5 pounds and most with 20" to 24" barrels, good caliber selection in standard ( non Weatherby) and 257 Weatherby Mag.
Look at Ruger Ultra lights too, about 6 pounds and a bunch of good Calibers too. Winchester has a few and the others you mentioned too.0 -

Thanks for all the advice, while I'm still deciding on caliber, I now know I want a detachable magazine. That way I can carry different rounds and change according to what's around me while hunting.
This does narrow the choices somewhat...
some Savages and Winchesters have removable box mags...
The TIkka T3lite is a strong contender,
Have to research Remington's more....
Still like the BAR...

Why not work your current gun into your needs. Swap out the stock to a Carbelite or Kevlar/Graphite type stock to reduce weight. Have a gunsmith install a muzzle break to reduce recoil. 30-06 then has so many different cartridge choices between all the manufactures that should meet your various needs. Factory loads from 125 grain bullets to 220 grain bullets and reloaders can use as small as 110 grain, maybe 100 grain.0 -
I have a savage scout Rifle in 7mm-08 , comes with ghost rings sights , forward mounded weaver type scope mount, detachable mag , syt. stock, nice little rifle , i haven't had time to scope it up yet so can speak to group size but just shooting off hand with the ghost rings sights it doea pretty good
I think Remington makes a 700 mountain gun that comes in 7mm-08 and has a detachable mag0 -

I noticed you got a lot of input for the 25-06. A great caliber, but there is another that can fit your bill. The .257 Roberts. The Ruger MkII Ultralight is pretty much as light a rifle as you are going to get and it won't kick bad with low rifle weight.
You can shoot varmints with 87 gr. Deer with 100-120 gr., although I use mostly 87grs for that, and with proper shot placement you can go after elk with the 120gr Nosler Partitions(same with 25-06). Mind your range and you will be okay. By that I mean stay within what you know you can shoot and place a bullet within at which distance you choose, i.e. you can shoot a 4" group at 200 but can only maintain a 8" group at 300, limit your shooting to 200 yds. That is a good ethic to have no matter what you shoot though.
Another good choice if looking for something in 25 cal. is the new 25 WSSM(total weight, 8lbs. 2oz.). I have one and love it, and true to the ballistics, I have loaded it to what the 25.06 will do and a little bit more. It will also take the 75 gr. Hornady A-max's up to 3700 fps. I have had a lot of luck with this little caliber as opposed to the mixed reviews I've heard with it's two predecessors, the .223 and .243 WSSM's

I think Remington makes their 700 titanium gun in 7-08. I believe it comes in at 5 1/2 lbs.
