Nickel Plating

Does anyone here do nickel plating(maybe crome) say a revolver cyl? Close to the mid west? Guessament on cost? Thanks / Eddie

    I have an quackenbush which I am restoring. It has little plating left. Where can I have this rifle replated as it was originally and what kind of cost would be reasonable?

    technicly no they cann't. If any one receives a 'firearm' from someone and does 'something' to it for money and then returns it to the owner they are a 'dealer'(gunsmith) and need a ffl. Also there are different kinds of nickle plating, car bumpers are different than firearms.

    Plating adds thickness to parts. You are better off sending the entire gun to a specialist who can make sure that everything works when it is completed. I recommend Pittsburgh Handgun; you can only trust a firearms plating expert.

    First time on the site, and I have enjoyed everyhting I have read so far. You all are doing a great job. I have the opposite side of cbxjeff's question that I could use a little advice on.

    I have a Series 70 Colt Gov't Model in .45 that was factory nickel plated. And in my slow but sure advancing age the glare from the plating bothers me when I shoot.

    Taking the previous comments into consideration, is it plausible to have the nickel removed and refinish the gun or would that be a nightmare in the fit department? Thanks

    (2) kinds of nickel plateing, Electronic & Electroless. Considering all the time and hand labor involved in removing the original finish on your colt, then polishing and reblueing, the project apears to be a economic none starter to me. Besides any time you refinish a firearm it has a very negative effect on its resale value.


    My 2?, is that it would be better and more realistic for you to sell your current pistol on the auction. Then buy a replacement with the finish you prefer.

    Brownells has a nickel plating removal kit that costs about $40 for enough of the chemicals to de-nickle a lot of pistols. It is a cold process, no electrolysis, just mix the chemicals and water, put the de-greased parts in an look at it every few hours. Thin places come clean quickly. Heavy plating or down in corners can take overnight or longer. Leaves the surface smooth and kind of gray color. It has worked fine for me. Won't touch chrome plating so be sure what you are trying to remove is nickel.

    Gents,

    Thanks much for your input, it helped. A friend also suggested replacing the slide. Then I would be able to shoot without the glare and preserve the original value.
