S&W revolver lanyard ring

I own this old S&W hand eject 2nd issue 44 s&w special. I need to know why the lanyard ring? I do not believe it to be military issue.

  Military was'nt the only ones to use the lanyard Ring..Police for One......Some Security Personel, Armed Guards...If they lost thier Firearm it was most likely hanging at the End of the string...and not lying in the bushes..............
