Hello IMHO you should buy 2 different types . #1 the cheapest lightest recoiling ammo you can buy to pratice and #2 a good jacketed hollowpoint for home def... Cheap ammo will let you pratice more light recoil will be easier on the gun and you . You will become a better shot. If and when the need comes for def... you need the best ammo money can buy and at this time you will not notice the increase in recoil. 0 -

You will undoubtedly get numerous opinions on this topic and that is as it should be.
My opinion for a defense load is based on the the the data documented by Evan Marshall and Ed Sanow's book: Stopping Power: A Practical Analysis of the Latest Handgun Ammunition. This is a database of actual shootings of people and the effectiveness of each caliber and loading within a caliber to make a one-shot stop. One-shot stop in the database means the fight has ended and is over. Marshall and Sanow were detectives in NYC in case you were wondering.
The two top loads for the 45ACP are Remingtion Golden Saber 185 grain bullet and the Federal Hydra Shok 230 bullet. Out of 83 shooting incidents, the Remington provided one shot stops 80 times or 96% effectiveness. Out of 173 shooting incidents, the Federal provided 166 one-shot stops or 96% effectiveness.
It doesn't get any better than this for defense loads. No other caliber or loading within a caliber is more effective than 96% one-shot stops. The 357 Magnum with 125 grain jacketed hollow point can equal the above 45ACP loads, but no other calibers have been documented to date to equal these three, not even the mighty 44 Magnum.
I handload all my 45ACP target loads so I can't advise on a good factory target load.

I carry a Kimber Ultra Carry .45ACP, for home defense and carry I like the Remington Golden Sabre the best...and so does the Kimber. As far as factory ammo for the range, the Kimber does not like the Remington UMC but does like Starfire.

Anything FMJ and non-corrosive for practice I have found is fine, except wolf. If you love your gun, you will not feed it wolf or any of that cheap bulk ammo you find at a gun show that is made in Japan.
For Self defense, the 185gr +p Rem. Golden Saber is a nice meat grinder.

My Ruger P97 likes Win. white box 230gr. JHP Personal Protection.
At 25 yds. it just penetrates a 1 gal. milk jug, mushrooms to about the size of a dime and I get 50 rd. boxes at Wally World for just under $12.
It works for me and that way I can practice with the same load that I will use for home defense.
In reality though, at typical self-defense ranges I'm not sure that's terribly important.
I'm fairly certain that at 7 yds.(21 ft.) the pistol is capable of hitting center of mass, regardless of what's in the magazine.

I don't have a 45, but I "carry" Winchester Silvertipped hollow's in my 40 and shoot around with any cheap well known FMJ, usually Remington. I've gone through the "Shooters' Bible" and compared the energy numbers from each manufacturer and each type of round. It will tell you what velocity, energy and some other ballistic information for any round (HP, HPBT, FMJ, SP, etc. in any grain) produced by any manufacturer in almost any rifle or pistol caliber. I suggest shelling out $20-$25 at your local gun shop for the same book. Also I heard (by talk not research) that Corbon ammo is unequaled when it comes to carry ammo. I believe "Handgunner" magazine rated the Winchester Silvertipped HP's best out of 6 or 7 different brands including CCI/Speer, Hydrashocks(I rate second), and others.
****again those are for the .40S&W I have they may be different for a .45ACP. I just was letting you know how I came about my decision****
