264-300 Weatherby Mag

Just got it, price to good to pass up.

Need help on working up a load.

Got dies, two pounds of H1000 and 100 rounds of 142 gr. Sierra HPBT Matchking bullets in the deal. I'd like to use this stuff up first.

Any help appreciated.

    You take a 300 Weatherby Magnum case and neck it down to a .264 caliber.

    [8D]--Yo oneyotie, I know you want to EXPER. , but remember Mr. Weatherby (in the 1940's) wildcatted the .257 WBY based on th 300 H&H case and there are a lot of BULLETS for it, so tend to your studies ---JIMBO

    Wow, an I thought that the 7mmSTW was getting overbore. How long is the barrel? If it is 26" I'm not sure that you will get much more then you would with a 264winmag. If you've got a 28" or better barrel then I suppose that it has potential. I hope that you have a chronograph for measuring bullet velosity, as that will be the only way you will be able to tell if you are getting anywhere. If you can find a good recipe for your bullets and H1000 powder for a 264winmag you could start there. Just be sure to fill the excess case space with an inert filler. The reloaders have been hijacking the paintball forum, you might post this question there. Any which way go slow and check for pressure signs, real often, as you work up your loads.

    The original cartridge was named the 6.5 x 300 WWH for Weatherby-Wright-Hoyer. Alex Hoyer was a Pennsylvania gunsmith who created this cartridge for Col. Paul Wright who used it to shoot in 1,000 yard competitions. Frank Weber even held a 1,000 yard record with the cartridge, 8.468" and a score of 50. The unfortunate part of this story is that none of the powders that he used are being manufactured today. His record load was 80 grains of H570 with a 140 gr. Sierra MatchKing.

    Without knowing your barrel length or twist rate, it's a little awkward to try and guess at some loads with currently available powders. Since you were supplied with the 142 gr. Sierras, I would guess that the twist is in the neighborhood of an 8" twist and maybe as slow as a 9" twist based on the potential velocity. The 9" twist would be a lot more gentle on the bullets with basically the same or better accuracy but the 8" twist is more likely. I'm hoping that your rifle has a 30" barrel at least.

    The H-1000 is a bit too fast for this cartridge/bullet combination in my opinion but it will all burn even if the barrel is shorter. The load density will only get up to about 90% of the available case capacity before you top out the pressure curve with the 142's. Use it and then move on to powders better suited to this case capacity and bullet weight if you have a longer barrel. Some of the loads that I've researched use a surplus powder WC-872. My suggestion is V V 24N41.

    shot beside one at a 600yd match,..the owner stated he would NOT be rebarreling in that caliber again. Too little barrel life.

    My first question would be how many rounds have been run down that bore. That is of great importance. If she has seen anywhere near 800-1000rnds, I would have the throat checked before moving foreward.
    If it is erroded very much, then having it set-back and rechambered first would make you a much happier camper when doing your load work-up. Other than that, the deal doesn't seem to have been to awful on your wallet considering the components and extras.

    why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

    This baby tops the scale at 19.75 POUNDS!!

    I gave $750 for everthing.

    It was a good deal, but that cartridge is way overbore and I would count on having to cut and rechamber the barrel in less than 1000 rounds.

    As for load data, I am not aware of any, so just work it up. I have found WInchester primers to be the softest and give the earliest signs of high pressure (as compared with CCI, Remington, etc.). Be careful and have fun!


    Save the seals-club a liberal instead.
