i found some shells with these markings on them what was this a rifle or pistol or both

I have an old winchester rifle chambered in this caliber. 0 -
The 25-20 WCF cartridge was designed for the Winchester Model 1892 lever-action repeater. It was used in a small number of single shot rifles as well. I am not aware of any handgun that was chambered for it.

I have a Winchester Model 53, which incorporates the 1892 action, in 25-20. It is a fun, good shooting rifle.

Hi,
The 25-20 was orignally made for the short action of the Winchester model 1892 just as Bert says. There is disagreement as to when the this cartridge was first offered. Some say 1893, some say 1895.
It was also chambered in the Winchester model 65, Remington model 25, Marlin model 27, Winchester model 94, and Savage model 23. Marlin also chambered their model 1894CL for this round. Winchester also loaded this cartridge with a slightly different bullet and headstamped it 25-20 Marlin.
I am not aware of any pistols chambered in this round. It was primarily used as small game and varmit cartridge before the 218 Bee and 22 Hornet were introduced.
This cartridge is viable as a living cartridge due the the popularity of Cowboy Action Shooting, whereas, a decade ago it was an obsolete cartridge. Currently, at least Winchester and Remington both manufacture ammunition for the 25-20.

I can positively state that the 25-20 WCF cartridge was introduced in the year 1893. I have factory letters for two separate Winchester Model 1885 single shot rifles (one a high-wall, and one a low-wall) that were chambered for it, and both were manufactured in 1893. The first Model 1885 chambered for 25-20 W.C.F. was received in the warehouse on March 9th, 1893.

Just a minor correction to your reply above. The 25-20 W.C.F. cartridge was never factory chambered in the Winchester Model 94 (it was chambered for the 25-35 W.C.F. though). In addition to the Models you mention, Winchester also chambered the Models 43 (bolt-action) and 53 (lever-action) for the 25-20 W.C.F. cartridge.

That is good information. I have relied upon Cartridges of the World which is known for some of its informational inaccuracies.
It is good to get firsthand information from someone who actually owns several of these rifles and can attest to the accurate history of both cartridge and weapon.
