Remington Model 700 .308 What do I offer him?

I've got to figure out what to offer this guy for his gun, you can read the exact information that he emailed to me. This is all that I know about the gun. I would like to know to your best knowledge what it is worth and what I should pay him. It is an hour drive to go look at it or buy it so I would like to be pretty sure that I am going to buy it before I go. I want this to be a deer rifle and just a long range target rifle. I hope to someday sell it for more than I payed for it, then upgrade to something more accurate.

What he wrote:

- I have one, what would you offer for it? it has a (I need to check) 4x scope on it, in fairly good shape, a little marring on the stock from 10 years ago. I'm assuming you are not a convicted felon, etc.
Please correct me if I'm wrong. Make me an offer. I'm not too attached to it, but I'm not giving it away free.

-It has a wooden stock. It does not have the bottom-loading option to my knowledge. I do not believe it has a heavy barrel.

-It has a Weaver 4x scope with matching rings. Scope is bright. There is a minor flaw on the stock (before it was finished) that you
have to look for to find. Otherwise, the stock looks nice with a rubber buttplate and checkering on the foregrip. The metal components could use rebluing. The magazine is a fixed, internal
magazine.


Thanks a lot guys. Also if I get it, what is the cheapest best target ammo to buy and where do I buy it?

    Well...Just yesterday i won this auction...34699162.
    I considered that win a homerun.
    It close to what you are looking at.
    Offer him $250.00 and see if he bites.
    As far as cheap practice ammo pickup some Nato spec .308 or buy the Wolf.
    Cant wait to get this one out to the range.

    Sounds like a Rem 700 ADL model. Although discontinued this year my dealer cost on the Rem 700 ADL .308 is $304.00 and I've been selling for about $349.

    So, 10 years old, nicked stock, needing reblueing, I personally wouldn't offer more than $150.00. Blueing is about $75.00. The scope is next to worthless. Tape a nickle on it and throw it in the trash.

    My opinion - stay away from it. You can get plenty of fine new rifles for around $350 including the 700 ADL, Howa 1500 (best bargain), Weatherby Vanguard, Steven's 200 (about $250 new), Savage (several models). The Rem 710 comes with a scope for about $319.00. I'd never own a 710 but then again I own over 100 rifles and can buy any model I want to. Also, I own every model above that I mentioned.

    Hmm...After rereading your post and seeing that the blueing is not so hot i retract what i said and would offer what the other guys have suggested.
    Guy Remington made these things by the gazilion and there are some good buys out there.
    But who knows he might take a low offer.

    There is one for sale in a shop here in NC that I've been eyeing. It is marked Remington 700,(no ADL or BDL) it has features of an ADL, meaning no forend tip, gripcap, floorplate , etc. Wood is nice walnut, and..it's new in the box for an asking price of only $300. Keep looking, there are bargains out there.

    Here's the update:

    I sent him an offer of $150, justifying the lowball by saying that it would cost at least $75 to reblue the barrel.

    He replied:

    Keep your money.



    So that's that. Thank you all for your helpful comments. I was pretty close to offering him $250, but after reading I decided that was too much. Thanks again.

    You have forgotten that the rem700 action will sell BY ITSELF for $300-$350 depending on condition and finish etc. Any 700rem will bring $300 at least, in rough condition. If you want a cheap rifle, and don't win an auction for cheap, look for another type of rifle,..but don't expect much for under $250 at minimum and more in the $300-$450 range.

    I would expect no less than $325-$350 for a rough rem700 if I were to sell it. The BR and LR guys will buy them all day long in that price range.

    why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

    i think you made the right choice. the gun didn't sound well taken care of so you never know what kind of problems you could have run into.
