woman's shotgun
Looking into getting the wife a shotgun for her side of the bed (got a mossy 12 on mine.) I like the winchester lady defender (20 gauge, 7+1 cap) but I was wondering if there were extensions available for the Remington 870 20 ga. Youth model to increase it from the standard 4? are they available? Does remington sell them or do I have to get them from a gunsmith etc?

no expert but i have never seen one for the 870 20 ga , i just use one of those slip on shell holders that go on the stock and hold 5 more rounds, may not be quite as good as a mag extension but it still put more round right at your hand 0 -

It is sometimes hard to do, but let your wife decide.
A defense shotgun for me is an 870 w/modification. After my boys out-grew the youth 20, I asked my wife if she was interested in it.
Somehow, she had problems remembering how to chamber the 1st round, or clear up a problem when in a hurry. When the adrenaline floods, the same would probably happen.
Now I don't know why, but she prefers a coach gun. Went through the same 'training' as with the 870 (i.e. with someone other than me giving instruction) and she did much better. Am I happy with it....yes....because she is.

I took my wife to the range to learn how to shoot my Winchester 1300 Defender in 12 gauge. 20's are fine also but load the 12 with field loads and all will be the same. She is petite and handled it well. 0 -
I agree with Select and even do this myself...I will load a field load as the first shot out of my 12. Follow-ups are #1 buck and slugs.
Light 12 loads may be a delight for the lady to handle. It is all that would be needed in a defensive situation in the distances encoutered in MOST homes (assuming you don't have a 'Southfork' mansion, ala Dynasty). There is also low-recoil 12 buck loads out there marketed for police use. Try 'em.

So if you get a regular 870 20ga. she has 4 shots and you have 8 right, 12 total? Thats alot of firepower.! Im not comin in! If your not home just let her use your 12ga.. and buy whatever 20ga pump she wants (or you really want). 0 -
It's not the recoil I'm worried about. I've taught her how to shoot and she's very strong and tough (she's a personal trainer and fitness competitor.) She's only about 5'5" so it's the gun dimensions/length of pull that is the primary factor for me. A smaller gun with a shorter stroke would be ideal for her but a larger capacity is also a consideration if ever the SHTF.

having two shotguns in one bedroom can cause confusion in a tactical situation. i think your mossy is all you need. teach her how to use it and identify who will be point while the other one does the dialing. having husband and wife shotguns for defense of the same room is absolutley overkill.
