I did not want to hi-jack the other thread.
Did Ruger ever sell a factory folder mini-14 that was not a GB model? I have seen a mini-14 with what appears to be a factory folding stock with no bayonet lug on the barrel. The front sling attachment was on the side suggesting that this is a factory folding stock. Did somebody have a GB folder and just changed the barrel out?

I just hope your varmit is big and not further away than 100 yds .Mini14's arent that accurate a good one will do about 3" at 100 yds By an AR15 if you want gas gun or just about any bolt gun in a varmit caliber. 0 -
My experience has been about 4" groups at 100 yards. I once spent a lot of time trying to accurize a Mini-14 and only got it to about 3" groups

As already indicated, calling a Mini-14 a "Varmint Gun" is an insult to guns that really do qualify in terms of accuracy. If you want an accurate gas gun in 5.56 NATO/.223, save your money and buy an AR style rifle. If you want real accuracy, get a bolt action rifle. If you want to join the laughable ranks of those who argue that a Mini-14 really is accurate, and are really only interested in home defense, buy a Mini-14. If you really would like something in-between, and you are interested in saving yourself a whole bunch of money, and are looking at a really nice rifle in terms of actual value, look at the SKS. Myself, I'd gladly take two SKS rifles for what a Mini14 sells for. If it came down to it, in a really tough situation, I'd trade a Mini-14 for an SKS.

apparently i got a good mini-14 because it would shoot 1 1/2" groups except for the one that always seemed to go about 5 inches high and right. and it was always the 5th shot. for a varmint rifle, i would go on and buy a savage if you are looking to save some cash or a remington 700 if you don't care. i would not go the sks route for a varmint rifle. you can probably pick up a used savage 223 for $250, maybe less. get a decent scope and you should have some pretty good groups out of it. i wouldn't go semi-auto on a varmint rifle, especially if you don't want to spend a lot of cash and will be taking lots of long shots.

Mine gets 6-10" groups at 100m, but thats at 850rpm, its a AC556.
Mini14's will never be that accurate, expect 3-4" groups @ 100m, even if its NIB.

Before I knew my Mini-14 was a worthless inaccurate firearm, (Note the sarcasm) I used to Coyote hunt with it and managed to take a couple. The longest shot was 114 yards.
The Mini-14 is not a tack driver and by the time you put the money into it to make it one, you could have purchased an AR Clone or bolt action rifle that would serve you better overall.
The Mini-14 is a fun gun. Over the past 20 years I have owned 4 differnt ones and still have two. With the right ammo, I have been able to achieve 2-4" groups at 100 yards.
As others have said if you are looking for a serious varment gun, there are better alternatives.

the mini 14's fun, good for keeping behind the seat, but not a serious varmint rifle. pony up and get an actual varmint rifle, not something that sort of does the job. 0 -
my mini-30 shoots 2moa w/ no accurizing. If your varmints are Coyotes, and the gun fits you, I'd give it a shot. There are just as many people who swear by them, as swear at them. I own an AR, and a Mini30, I really like them both. If I was going to be in a firefight, I'd shoot the mini. It has never given me a single problem, but from what I hear, I may be one of the lucky ones.

I wonder if there is an accuracy difference in the mini 14 and the mini 30? Same rifle, different caliber. I have no experience with either, but always wanted a mini 30. Any opinions?

See if you can get you buddy to let you shoot it. I have heard there some mini-14's that actually function. Mine was a jamatic with anything but the factory magazine. Groups were 6" to 8" at 100yds.
AR15's are starting to get down to the $600 and lower range, take that in consideration to your buddies offer. I built one to my specs just recently for $675. I think you could assemble one cheaper.
Give me a choice between mini-14 and an SKS, I'd take the SKS. Mine is a joy to shoot, and is accurate as can be.

The accuracy of the 14 and the 30 are about the same. Here is a web site on how to accurize the Ruger Mini.

This site has a lot of info on how to accurize a Mini. Many are free and some are just a few bucks. Check out the "Shooting Contest" forum on this site and see what the mini can do. The guys at this site help me get my mini to shoot MOA, all for less than 100 bucks. Here is one of my mini 30 targets at 100 yards.0
