303 to 7.62x54r conversion?
I found a company on the internet that offers conversions from 303 to 7.62x54r on the Enfield No4 Mk1 rifles. They rechamber the rifle, modify the mag, recrown the barrel, and test fire before and after for $160 includeing return shipping. For $60 extra they will refinnish the metal (parkerize, gun kote, or flat blue). Has anyone here had one done or know of someone who has and seen how well the conversion worked? I have a excellent U.S. Property marked Savage but would like to have it in 7.62x54r wich is much more economical. The company claims up to a 50% reduction in shot groups.

i HAVE NOT SEEN A FULL CONVERSION DONE BUT I SAW A GUY AT THE RANGE LAST YEAR THAT CONVERTED ONE ,BUT IT WAS ONLY A SINGLE SHOT HE DIDNT ALTER THE MAG.ANY HE SAID IT SHOT WELL AND ALWAYS COULD FIND AMMO FOR IT,UNLIKE THE 303 AS OF LATE. WHATS THE WEB SITE???IT WOULD BE WORTH LOOKING INTO! THE OPERATING PRESSURES ARE SIMILAR AND RIM SIZE IS NOT THAT FAR OFF EITHER . 0 -
Why? There is nothing wrong with the .303, and you won't gain any performance with the Soviet round. Both are rimmed, so that arguement is out the window as well. All major ammunition manufacturers have at least one loading for .303, which is more than can be said for the 7.62x54R. .303 Surplus ammo is still available and cheap as well. To me this is like saying "I want to convert my .338 Ultra mag to .338 Lapua.". There is no practical reason to do so. In either case, magazine capacity and ballistics will remain identicle.
IMHO, if you want to shoot the 7.62x54, buy an Eastern bloc gun.
If you want accuracy, buy a modern bolt gun or high-end semi-auto.
Save the seals-club a liberal instead.0 -
375, when was the last time you tried to buy 303 surplus? The only thing out there for the last 2 years is that Pakistani Click bang stuff. The 7.62 russian carry at least a 15% ME advantage over the 303, and it has 20% higher powder capacity. I fitted a bren mag to a russian svt-40 a few years ago, to I am fairly certain mags would be no problem. as to the group reduction?????????? I think they are blowing smoke up your arse.

you are going to trash a collectable rifle just to save a few $$ on ammo?. not a good idea. you can buy 'hot shot' ammo for $35/100 +- and the brass is reloadable. 0 -

Not collectible? Just like the Springfields huh? Oh wait, they're ALL climibing in cost.... well it's your rifle, go ahead and do what you want, it will make my unaltered specimins a little more valuable.
That's my rant, sorry, I do get upset when I see someone alter a historic gun. But to your question, I don't see why not, though keep in mind the Russian surplus will also dry up in the not TOO distant future. One advantage I see is that a lot of Enfields have loose chambers; the reaming out would likely correct this. It would be an interesting project, just not one I'd personally do.

Why do you want to dump more into a low end milsurp rifle than its worth to buy it originally?There are alternatives like reloading. Even hard cast lead is a cheaper alternative.Might as well buy a Mosin and have both.Even one of those cheap Mausers in 8mm. if all you wanna do is blast for short money.

Cost is only one issue. There is also the advantage have haveing a detachable mag. My Savage Enfield is in very nice condition with a excellent two groove bore and all new wood. I Do have several mosin nagants but they only hold five rounds and have a fixed mag. The bolt is already bent on the Enfield and I have an S&K mount (Does not reqiure any permament modifacations to the rifle). Even the soft point ammo for the 7.62x54r is around $5 a box not to mention were are you going to find steel core 303 for around $60 a 880 round case. With the exception of some brass cased surplus I have never had any problems with the surplus 7.62x54r round and have owned over 20 Mosin Nagants in the last five years from M 39's, M 38's, M 44's, M 1891's, and M1891/30's. I now have three Tula M 1891/30's and I think they are great but I still think The Enfield with its advantages would make a better hunting and target rifle in the 7.62x54r round than the Mosin Nagant will.
