What was the name of those rounds they dont make any more? something along of the lines of black claw..or something the spread looked just like a crows claw.

They were never outlawed. The public just made enough stink about them that Winchester wussied out about it. The 147 gr 9mm and 230 gr .45 versions had too little velocity to expand worth a hoot in flesh. It was all a load of bs, from start to finish. 0 -
Super Vel is even rarer and more sought after.

And, correct me if I am wrong here, Winchester only stopped marketing to civilians with the Black Talon, it was, and may still be, sold to LEO's only. 0 -
The LEO ammo is called "Ranger" too. Same bullet, but instead of it being black in color, it's copper colored.

The Black Talons were never anything to write home about. I aquired some in 10mm, and they were barely hotter than .40 S&W loads. Hydrashok is even worse. The Gold dot is about teh best defensive round you can buy, IMHO. Cor-Bon is potent, but some guns do not take well to the severe truncated cone of the Sierra Bullets. Buffalo Bore uses Gold Dot bullets, but loads them much hotter than Speer. Remington Gold Sabres are a pretty decent round, too.
Honestly, though, once I chronographed Black Talons and Hydra-shoks, I decided to use the rest of them as range ammo.

The way I heard it was that the Medical community pressured Winchester to take the Black Talon off the market. This occured just as the AIDS thing was really scaring the crap out of everybody. The surgeons were worried that the sharp petals would cut through gloves during emergency room surgery and any goon shot by the police may have AIDS. When you think about all the hysteria about AIDS during that time frame, the story may or not have any basis in fact. Thats just how I heard it.
With all the gun control measures championed by the medical community in the U.S., would it really surprise anybody if this was true? Again, it's just what I heard and may be another urban legend. Who knows.

Actually...before ballistic vests were in common use in law enforcement, several of the antigun Magazine TV Shows labeled Black Talons as "Cop Killer Bullets".
Winchester didn't need the bad publicity, so they dropped the "Black Talon" line and quietly changed the color and name and put 'em back on the market as Rangers.0 -
