Sfield Socom 16 ?'s

Just went to the new Cabela's store in Ft. Worth today and got to take a closer look at a new Socom 16 rifle.

I really like the looks and handling of this liitle dude but don't have any experience with any M1A/M14 type rifles.

What do you guys think about these guns as far as performance,accuracy etc.?

Thinking hard about getting one down the the road but wanted to get some 1st hand info from some you more seasoned shooters before actually bringing one home.[:)][:D]

    I think the SOCOM is a neat little package. I'd prefer a wood stock model and I always thought the M1A should have been a 30-06 too but that model is very tempting and makes a lot of sense. I handled a couple and like I said.....very tempting

    I have a Socom 16 and 3 other Springfield M1A's. They are all excellent rifles. The 16" Socom is a very handy package that packs a very powerful punch. The muzzle break works like no other. It manages muzzle rise very well.

    I have shot about 150 rnds from it so far and it is just as reliable and accurate as the other outstanding Springfields I have.

    humongously overpriced for the performance you get. A 16" 308 means a 150 gr bullet at 2500 fps, which is 30-30 type performance. I ain't paying $1500 for that sort of short ranged baloney. I can get 90% of that sort of "performance" with a $150 sks, ferchrissakes.

    I suppose you'd consider my AR-10 carbine over-priced as well, then? I should shoot some Eastern bloc gun instead? Well, since my 16" AR will group 1.65 MOA and penetrate 3/4" plate steel at 30 yards with 162gr. AP I think I'll stick with it; the 7.62x39 won't do this out of any length barrel and I have yet to see an SKS that could keep 5 shots in a fist-sized pattern at 100 yards. Oh yeah, my AR will make it through a magazine without jamming 3 times. There is a reason that many collectors do not have an SKS, like we could spend that $150 on ammunition for a gun that will hit the target.

    Mopar:
    the Socom16 is a nice, handy rifle in a good caliber and I am quite sure you would like it. While my personal preference is for the AR, the Springfield is just as good and about the same price. Accuracy from the Socom16 is similar to the AR-10 Carbine, so while it won't be a match winner, it is plenty accurate for it's intended purpose. And I don't think you would have any trouble ringing gongs at 500 yards with it. Also, all of these rifles work great with short-range optics such as Aim-Point's or Leupold CQ/T.

    Save the seals-club a liberal instead.

    I think Hunter hit the nail on the head. I have an AR-10A4 and an M1A and both are nice shooters. Did you have a specific use for the rifle in mind? I'm just curious.

    Wow,thanks for all the great info.You folks always seem to come though when another member needs a little help.

    Kinda looks like there will be one in my safe in the near future

    What I'll be using it for will be target shooting at 200-400yds or so and might even give it a try next time I go hog huntin' with my brother.

    If you stick with the 10 rd mag, the SKS is monotonously reliable. Steel Cored 7.62 x39 ammo will outpenetrate 308 ball ammo, and the issue is how FAST you can hit (for combat rifle) inside 200m, with most of it being inside 100m. Put the $1300 saved (buy buying the SKS, not some joke of a short barrled 308) into practice ammo and decent instuction, and be WAY ahead. Don't have to cry if the $150 sks is stolen out of the vehicle, either. That means that you are many times more likely to HAVE the SKS (than the $1500 308) when you need a rifle, too.

    I have an SKS and an M-1A with the bush barrel installed and love both. The SKS is ultra-reliable with any ammo, but would take the M-1A in a pinch any day. It is more expensive, but gives more down range effect than the SOCOM or the SKS.

    i would just go on and get the national match if i was going to spend the $$$ for the SOCOM. it just doesn't seem like a practical gun for my uses. but they look cool and i would like to have one to show my buddies and let them oogle over it. it would probably make a really good truck gun. i would spend the extra $1300 and buy the springfield over the sks any day. i wouldn't want people looking in my gun cabinet and seeing something like that.

    When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.
