20mm Cartridge question

Found a 20mm round this weekend. No primer, just a brass case with no hole for a primer. The projectile has a steel tip(in the white) with a steel base(black) at the base of it is a ring w/ *HVM-20-6 53 20MM T283E stamped around it. I figure June 20th 1953?? Is this a Training round? Any info welcome.

    Well , if it wasnt a brass case , I would say it may be a 'set-up' round used on the giant loaders (about the size of a car!), never seen one with a brass case,just steel...these were the exact size and weight as the 'perfect' loaded round...saw plenty of them @ Olin/Winchester while working there...

    What you have, is a training round for the 20mm Hispano-Suiza aircraft cannon, with inert warhead. We (USN)used these cannon in the early 1950's. Four were mounted in the nose of the Grumman F9F-5 "Panther" and the later Grumman F9F-7 "Cougar" jet fighters. The HS 20mm design was a real "Rube Goldberg", and the ONLY auto weapon that was gas operated, blowback, and recoil operated all at once. The damned things fired from an open breech, with inertia firing pins.
    When a plane with faulty or lack of hydraulics landed, four or more rounds flew up the deck into parked planes or deck crews.
    Ammo included a high explosive incendiary round, which, (it was alledged), would detonate if dropped 3 feet to a steel deck.
    The Soviet Mig-15 jet used by the opposition in Korea, had very good 30mm cannon.

    According to COTW, the "T" designator indicates an experimental U.S. Cartridge.

    T283 is listed as "Cartridge, 20mm, Armor-Piercing-Incendiary-Tracer".

    THE ARMY ALSO USED THE H.S., I WAS TRAINED TO REPAIR THEM IN THE LATE 1960'S, WE ALSO HAD THEM AS 'TOWER GUNS' IN NAM.
