Best .223 Target Rifle-Characteristics

I would like to buy a new or used match rifle for target and the occasional ground hog hunt. As I look through the vast array of AR-15 type weapons, I am bewildered by the add ons and types of guns.

What and who makes a really good match rifle and what are the important modifications to look for or have done?

I realize this is a big subject, I could really use the help.

    Might check out the Bushmaster Varminter, for out of the box precision they are pretty reasonable and shoot well

    Thankyou for the help, is there a recommendation for a rifle with iron sights. Also, I understand that there "accurizing" , what is it and what are the best modifications to make?

    I've have the same problem. My center fire match rifles are a custom made 30-06 for 600-1000 yds, Model 40x in 308 and Fulton Armory M1A Peerless. No black guns. Everyone eles has one and I've shot quite a few of them.

    I have looked at bunch of different target AR's and have been around long enough to see the developement from an ok gun to a great one. I think the Compass Lakes, Olympic, Rock River Arms and the like are all good, but the rifle isn't that hard of a machine to make. I think when I finally buy one it's going to be another Fulton Armory.

    I know one thing, it will be service rifle legal and not a space gun.
