remington 721

I was at a gun show Saturday and saw a Remington 721 in a .257 Roberts. I thought the 721s were only made in a .270, .30-06 and a couple Magnums. In the gun books it says that they made a .257 Roberts in the Remington 722 but the one I saw the dealer had 721 wrote on the tag and I am 99.99% sure I remember seeing 721 on the reciever.

Did Remington make the 721 in a .257 Roberts?

    The striker must be in the cocked position or the safety will not work. That is, work the action (make sure the firearm is not loaded) and close the bolt. Pull the trigger to see if the firing pin drops. If it does drop (fire) then do it again and try engaging the safety.

    The 721 safety does not function the same as the modern 700. The newer 700 safety will engage with the striker in either the cocked or fired position.

    I think the 721 trigger works just like the early 700 which had the tab on the safety that locked the bolt closed when on safe. Remington changed this back in the 80"s so that you can open the bolt with the safety on. when I get an old 700 with the safety tab I cut it off and throw it away,it makes the gun more safe.
    Your problem sounds like the safety lock tab may be involved since it works with the bolt open but not when closed. Take it out of the stock and work the safety with the bolt open and closed and observe how it works. If the locking tab wont slide into a groove on the underside of the bolt handle that may be the problem . there is a pin that projects out of the side of the trigger frame that goes in out as the safety goes back and forth ,sometimes if the wood compresses and the rifle seats deeper with age the depression in the inner side of the stock wont let the pin emerge . you have to grind a depression for it to go into .Stock fit can mess up the safety ,if it works when out of the stock then the wood is the cause.If its the groove in the bolt handle clean up any burrs etc. If it still wont work take it to a gunsmith as it could be other problems that may make it dangerous.
