Converted mauser to 458 Magnum

I have just recently converted my old large ring mauser to a 458 Mag. I bought a 458 barrel from midway along with a receiver wrench. I took the old bolt to a machine shop and had them take a little off so that a 458 rim would fit and changed barrels and stock. It shoots great. I would like to know if any one else has done this to an old military action and not the actions offered by charles daly. I would also like to hear what you think about this conversion. Thanks.

    I think you have a great gun there. Waht is the barrel diameter at the end? My 458 kicks like hell with factory ammo. Jim

    The only thing stopping me from your very same project is being a little scared of the headspace issue. Did you check yours or have someone do it for you?
    Nice project and sounds like a fun / cheap project gun.
    Are you going to sporter stock it or is it already so?

    Surplus Mauser actions have been being used for many decades to build magnum rifles of all types. The thing is that you really need to have the action inspected/magnafulxed/&whatall so that you have confidence that the rifle will hold together for the next 100 years. I know that Douglas will rebarrel old Mauser 98 actions, but only after they pass their inhouse inspection process. Also the type and quality of the action could be and issue here. Over the years some actions have come to be recognized as having been built to higher standards then others. Pre WWII German, FN and Check actions are often held in such reguard. But, even these may have had incidence on the battlefield which could have hurt them, say like the heat treating could have been affected in a fire. I own a 338WinMag that I built on a Burno action, it is a fine rifle. Still I regularly check the headspace with a "nogo" guage just to be sure that nothing is moving. Magnums operate at a significantly higher pressure then say a 30-06. Because of this the hazard goes up accordingly.

    Ive got one I rebarrelled to 450 Marlin, I had to do a little fiddling with the feed rails and ramp to get it to cycle proper.I love to hunt with it as it is incredibly accurate with the Hornady factory ammo. It literally will knock a deer a flip and you dont worry about being in the brush. This round is 350 gr softnose and the velocity is almost the same as the Lyman manual gives as the start or minimum load for a same weight bullet in the 458 mag. Ive thought about doing one in 458 mag and may get around to it yet.
    If you want to use it on deer try the Hornady 350 gr in a reload. As deadly and hard hitting as it is you dont get a lot of blood shot meat like a high velocity smaller round produces.

    I put a 14 oz mercury recoil reducer in the butt and put a thick butt pad on and added a weight right in front of the action. The size of the barrel at the end is .725" recoil is pretty mild with the added weight and the mercury reducer and the thick buttpad. I changed the military stock to a sport stock. I used "go and nogo guages" I had to finnish reaming the barrel cause it was .50" short in the chamber. It's not a bench rifle but it is pretty accurate.
    I have shot 10 rounds out of it and checked the gun all over to see if it has loosend at all it was tight all over. Thanks for the comments.
