Removing Parkerizing

HAIRY
Saw a product-Evapo-rust-that claims it can remove blueing and parkerizing merely by soaking the item in the solution. Hype or fact?

Any other way to remove the stuff other than blasting?

    I know a guy who used an angle-grinder to take the finish off a 1920's vintage Colt Government Model 1911. He wanted a "silver" gun...and he got one.

    I believe phosporic acid will dissolve parkerizing. I would wager that your product in question probably will dissolve park

    I use muriatic acid (aka hydrochloric) as my general purpose remover for finishes, rust, etc. Cost about $4 for a gallon at farm & home stores and some big hardwares, etc. Primary market for it is rural sewage maintenance. Used it yesterday to remove rust from an antique pistol barrel that had a lot of gold work on it. Acid 50-50 with water applied with an old paint brush cleared the rust in about 10 minutes leaving gold undamaged. I then re-browned the barrel that came out looking great. As with any acid take care with spills, good ventilation, skin, clothing,etc. When mixing add acid to water rather than water to acid. It is cheap enoughto try it on your parkerizing removal. It won't damage steel but will allow it to rust quickly if not cleaned well afterward.

    what rhmc24 said, I just did a 1903 springfield that was of 'mixed' heritage (some blued & parked. parts). ran it threw my cleaning tank the dipped it in 50/50 hcl & h20, back into the cleaning tank and then the bluing tank. it came out with a nice black finish similar to the original.

    Hairy, cloud you please let us know how it turns out. I recently picked an old parkerized 870 with quite a bit of rust in need of refinishing.

    dbarle: Didn't have a chance to use the acid (wife ended up using it in the pool). Sold the gun for parts and didn't have to bother. Will keep these notes for future reference tho.
