model 88 winchester .358
Am having a model 88 winchester rebarreled to .358 winchester. Am primarily going to use rifle for close range large black bear(400 to 600 lbs+) in thick cover. Was wondering if anyone had any sugestions for barrel length ,twist,loads,etc.. Am considering 18". Will be a douglas barrel, work done by Plumlee of Progun, Bayboro, N.C. At sometime in future gun might be scooped and used on elk in New Mexico, but will be primarily used as described above. (don't want to short change cart. by an inch but length important in getting through incredibly thick N. C. pocosin's.

I shoot a lot of 20 inch pipes. Nothing wrong with 18 especially in a manlicher type stock. I built a Scout rifle on a Krag action and made it a 35 Krag. It has slighlty more case capacity than the 358 Win. It has a 20 inch pipe, very handy and runs 225 gr. bullets around 2200 fps. that load zeroed 3 inches high at 100 is on at 200 and remains in an 8 inch circle to around 275 to 300 yds. That's all the game shooting range you need and with premium bullets I'd not be afraid to hunt anything in this country. 0 -
Also keep in mind that modern smokeless powders are burned in the first 6 inches of barrel 0 -
remington's 30-06 carbine is only 18 1/2in so you should be in good shape. or just buy a remington 7600 carbine. about the 4-600 lb bear, what part of NC are you hunting? i live in VA and you are lucky to kill a bear over 350. the NC license non resident is really cheap and i would like to kill one over 400.
