russian rifle

this was part of my grandfathers collection. i need help on what exactly it is. i was told it was a sniper rifle from 1931. here is what i found
a hammer and sicle inside a circle of leaves. the following numbers
on the barrell: 1931r , 5136, a triangle with a arrow, a cirlce with the roman number II in it.
on the side of the barrell 364753
underneath near the trigger 5196.
it has a long sight with numbers
a long rod under the barrell and a slot in the stock for a strap.
i only hunt with shot guns so i have no-idea what anything stands for or is.
any help will be greatfull.

    From your description, your Grandfathers rifle appears to be a Mosin Nagant.

    This picture I got from Bob Adams excellent site shows a Hungarian Mosin Nagant Sniper Rifle. Is it similar to yours?

    rufe-snow that is it! i donot have a scope though. i have a friend that would like to buy it but donot know how much i should ask. one guy at a gun shop tried to tell me all i could get was $60. and he said it was a mauser? thats why i came on here. i knew you guys would know. you said hungarian so its not russian?

    from yor discription it sound like a early hex reciever Mosin nagant model 91/30 . the russians started building the 91/30 fron 1929,1930 till about 1944,45 ,yours is a russian made one not hungarian the hammer and sickle within the wreath is just the communist crest and the triangle with the arrow inside it is the arsenal stamping it was made at the Izhvesk arsenal in russia in 1931 which is a pretty early and hard to come by date . its also mismatched sn # so the value is not all that great if its not import marked its value would be around 150- 250 depending on its condition maybe a bit higher . if its a original sniper model it will have a bent bolt handle and the left side of the reciever will have holes for the scope mount .hope that helps you out.

    Your rifle is a Russian, per your description of the markings. Unless it is a AUTHENTIC military sniper rifle like the one pictured, it's not likely to be worth a lot of money. Mosin-Nagant Rifles are being imported from the ex-communist countries in great quantities. It's possible to buy them in excellent condition for less then $70.

    ok i check again and there are 3 stamp numbers that are the same :5196 on the barrell, the butt end and the bottom under the trigger. the bolt is not bent it is short and straight and the number on it is longer than the other 3? i did not see any holes on the top left side?
