    It might....
    The brake may reduce shooter flinch from the anticipation of recoil. Some experts feel that the air being pushed out of the bore in front of the bullet through the brake may help the barrel remain more stable during the passage of the bullet.

    I don't know of a down side except for the increase in side blast and the resulting noise increase to the shooter.

    Over the years I probably put on over 100 muzzle brakes. I know of no
    instance that accuracy was affected. Velocity was not affected either.
    Verified this with a chronograph with and without the brake.

    The engineers at Browning obviously believe that it does, because the BOSS system that they market allows you to turn the muzzle brake to improve accuracy.

    I've heard (not experienced) it can effect accuracy both negatively and positively as it can change the harmonics of the barrell.

    It has been a long time, but I believe my BOSS just 'adjusted' the harmonics of the bbl., venting was not the primary deal. There was specific wording on the bbl being 'free floated'.

    At the time I just treated it as a 'black box', and it DID have an effect on the grouping of different loads.

    Am I recalling this correctly, or am I farther down the road than I thought.

    The BOSS is more than just a muzzle brake, it is called a ballistic optimizing shooting system.( Okay whatever that means ). A BOSS also has a another option where you can install an eliminator and it replaces the muzzle brake part and just lets you use the BOSS for adjusting your group size, this is done on the principal of barrel harmonics. My .338 Win Mag with a BOSS has shot groups as small as .65" with the muzzle brake on and as small as .268" with out the "brake", but I think that little bit of difference can be blamed on me, not whether it had a brake on or not.
