Marlin 39, button by hammer is ??

I have used the same Marlin 39 for over 40 years. I have a 'need' for another. I have given 2 in gifts over the years, and I guess I am glad they seem to hold their value. I have noticed something I have never seen before on auction #34711524.

While I don't pine for this particular gun, is the 'button' near the hammer a safety ? If so, is it un-common or have I just never seen it before ?

  Can you give me an approximate timeframe for 'later' guns.
  I'll do some searching for it if you can't ball-park it for me.
  Since I've never seen it, I don't want it.

  can't say for sure but its been close to 20 years now that Marlin has been using the cross bolt safety... 1984 was when Marlin made the change to the Model 1894 line,, adding the cross bolt safety , i believe it was about the same time for the model 39 also
