.410 conversion project

I saw this on yahoos gunkitbuilders. Has anyone ever tried a project like this before?

I have a .410 chamber mandrel and I figured turn them
between centers and turn a spigot about 4-6" down the
barrel and cut it off there. Then use the spigot to
center it in a four jaw chuck. From there, center up
the barrel and unsure it is parallel with the bed and
then bore it out and cut a stop for the new barrel.

Then turn a new barrel to fit with a collar that butts
up against the stop I cut in the barrel stub and
silver solder the mess together.

I figure on trying to rust blue the barrel and action
since I don't want to pay to have it case hardened.
Make up a nice new set of wood and have a fun little
gun to shoot .357 and .38 at 100 yards.

Anyone see any flaws or problems?"

    It goes on all the time..Most often by barrel liner companys but the way he has it worded it will surely work out for him..I don't see the advantage of making it a 357 rather than a small rifle round but that is what he wants..Think of it in 223 or 218 or 22 hornet or 204 ruger,now that gives me ideas..Thanks for the subject..modoc

    I don't know about silver solder. That's a lot of heat. Soft solder over a 6" length or one of the Loctites plus a crosspin should do it.
    I'd like a a similar gun in 32Mag to shoot 32Long and Mag handloads.

    have seen several 'projects' like this , some interesting at best , but can be "fun" to tinker with...

    Several years I did something similar to this. Sise by side double.
    Cut barrels to 22 in., back bored and choke tubes in left barrel. Turned down a 458 caliber bland to fit the inside of the right barrel and chambered to 45-70. Added rifle sights. Hardest part was maiing extractor that functioned 100 percent. Also had to bush the rifle firing pin hole and make smaller firing pin. The guy is still using it and would not part with it. Everyone should do this...ONCE.

    Sounds like great fun, but I do see 2 potential problems.

    1. Depending on the caliber you are converting to, a firing pin change may be in order as BT99 stated in his posting.

    2. I would think that most pistol calibers would be a blast, but watch out for some of the high pressure rifle rounds in this type of conversion. Most of these single shots use a casting for the reciever and have limited strength. Remember, they were designed to take the backthrust of a shotgun round, not a .300 Eargasplittenloudenboomer! Have fun. [:D]
