Do I Need FFL to Mail Gun ?
I live in NY. I do not have an FFL. Can I legally mail a long gun to a valid FFL dealer in my state or any other state ?

NY is one of the stricter states regarding firearms laws. Although to the best of my knowledge, it's legal to use the USPS to ship Rifles and Shotguns to holders of FFL 01 licenses in most states, NY MIGHT be an exception?

It is legal to mail a nonrestricted firearm (not a machine gun,grenade launcher,short barrel) to a dealer/gunsmith and as far as I know to receive the gun back after it has been fixed or whatever. I wouldn't accept a firearm for mailing from someone I didn't know or who shows sketchy ID. You may also be required to prove that the arm is unloaded and safe. Not sure about the advantage of this because I don't think a lot of window clerks know enough to determine this. Most will see a little wood and blue and say OK or freak and hit the security buzzer.

Oops, forgot to pass on some advice. Before you go to the PO, call and talk to the PM or a supervisor. Explain that you have a firearm to mail and find out when a knowledgeable person would be on duty to properly receive the package. DON'T indicate on the outside that it contains a gun. In fact, if you can, don't use gun shop, gunsmith, or similar terms in the address.

i just mailed a gun the other day and the postmaster told me that you cant mark it as a gun.. they wont ship it if its marked as a gun... they even made me use an alternative name for the gun smith i was sending it to.. had to call him up and get his name insted of using his buisness name 0
