Remington Wingmaster 870

Once again, a friend just picked up a Remington Wingmaster model 870 in 12g, 2.75" with a short (18" or 20" barrel-no we didn't measure it). He is wondering age, value, availability and wisdom of putting a longer 3" barrel on the gun. Serial # is V094676V. Barrel is marked Remington Arms, Inc, 2-3/4" 12 G. Reciver says Remington Wingmaster model 870. I don't have it in front of me but there were some other marks on the barrel, which by other posts, I guess would indicate age and other info. They weren't very sharp and may be hard to read. Any advice, hints, info greatly appreciated.

  If it doesn't have an "M" at the end of the serial #, you can't shoot 3" shells in it without alot of conversion work. You can use a barrel chambered for 3", but you can only use 2 3/4" shells. You can find a new 870 bbl here, or check the auctions on GB.

  You probably have a model 870 riot gun. They are listed with the 18-20 barrels. The model 870 deer gun has the short barrel also with rifle sights on it.
  
  The models made for 3 and 3.5 inch have a different ejector staked into the reciever. A barrel swap will not make it work. 870's can be picked up for a song, why mess around trying to convert an old one?
