Pre 64 Winchester Model 88 in .358

I recently acquired a Pre 64 Winchester Model 88 in .358.

The serial # is 765XX and estimated DOM is 1959.

Overall Condition is good. No rust, no cracks in the stock. It has a dime size blemish in the wood finish near the receiver tang. Williams Peep sights. 3 magazines, no marking on them to indicate caliber.

Only bad thing I can say about the gun is that the butt plate \ recoil pad is in poor condition due to standing in a safe for many years.

Should I attempt to replace the butt pad? Or leave as is?

There seems to be a lot of discussions in the forums about this particular item.

I am not a collector, and I intend to eventually sell this rifle. What is the realistic value?

    Value ??? I also have a pre '64 88 in .358. Its about 95 percent and all origial. Turned down $2200.00 for it.

    This is a hot firearm for the collectors right now. Next year it may be another matter. If you don't intend to keep and appreciate it, then you might be well advised to not waste alot of time in trying to get top dollar for it. Good luck in finding out what fair value is. As with many things it is all in the eye of the buyer.

    Depends on which you are talking about. The original butt plate was made of plastic, about 3/16 of an inch thick. If your gun has a recoil pad , it would be aftermarket addition.

    After rereading your topic , I saw the the serial number on your 88 is a 1956, not a 1959. Which would make it more collectable.
    That is what the collector calls a pre '57. Your rifle should have the cloverleaf tang. This was the first year for the .358 . For some reason the .358 was discontinued after the 1962, so its production run only totaled seven years.
