    Just traded for a Remington Model 7 7mm SA Ultra Mag topped with a 4x12 Vari-X II. 160gr or 150gr? Which would be best? Any comments on the toy in general? How many of yous guys got one and like em? Educate me please...

    I do not own one of these and i have never owned one of the short mags, so you may want to stop reading at this point , but since about 50 people have looked at this without responding, there must not be awhole lot of expertise on this combination yet. I have owned several model 7's and several 7mags though. I understand that the 7mm short is pretty darn close to the 7mm remington with factory, but have also read that it is not as close if you handload....with that said, I am predujice toward speed, in that I think faster is better. I live in colorado and three people in my hunting party have killed about 25 elk between them using the the 7mm remington with 140 grain partitions...no losses that I am aware of, rangeing from taking 2 shots inside 100 yards to a 1 shot kill at almost 600 ...one of these hunters has decided to move up to 150 grains for the added energy thinking it was a beneficial tradeoff for the minimal loss of trajectory he would loose at long range...the others in the group were more then happy to take his old 140's off his hands..since that time , he hasnt had an opportunity to take an elk and now has a new pet 300 so probably wont be using that combination anyway...now that i set the table, i will go ahead and say, in my opion,unless you are after game tougher then elk, that the 140 or 150 grain might be a better choice then the 160 assuming you arent a close cover timber hunter... I am sure there are others that have had a bad experience with a lighter, or bullet of poor construction that would say just the opposite ( I lost a nice bull after 3 shots in the boiler maker using a .270 with 130 grain solid bases @ 265 paces,after it walked into the black timber never to be seen again...now I use a .340 with 210 partition and dont have a problem with anything(other then a touch of recoil!) ) PROBABLY , you can answer your own question better then any "expert"....if one of the bullets you shoot groups in the .5-1.5" range and the other shoots in the 2.5-4" range , you may be able to come up with what will suit YOU best for what you are hunting at the most likely ranges you will get an opportunity for a shot...good luck !
