serial # 52xx made around 1907. says COLT POLICE POSITIVE 38 Is that 38 S&W or 38 special ?

  One of the main differences between the Police Positive ( 38 S & W & 38 New Police ), and the Police Positive Special ( 38 S & W Special ), is the length of the cylinder.
  
  Place a loaded 38 Special Cartridge on the OUTSIDE of the cylinder, if it's to long*, your revolver is the Police Positive.
  
  
  
  
  *Won't work with wadcutters of course. Use 158 grain round nose ammo.

  The Colt Police Positive Special can be either .38 special or .32-20. But the "Special" model in .38 is normally the only model which is .38 special. The Colt Police Positive marked .38 is normally .38 S&W. I've owned both.
