K 31 and Mosin Nagant
What is the overall length of the Swiss K 31 carbine and rifle? Which would be the best choice for a knock around gun to carry with me on the atv around the ranch, the K 31 or a Nagant? thanks Steve

From the heel of the butt to the tip of the barrel mine is 43 and 3/4". It would work pretty good for a pickup rifle. I have found that mine is incredibly accurate. I have put together many sub moa groups using Nosler J4 155, 168's and Swiss GP11 ammo.
However, I must warn you that the K-31 chamber is a bit larger than the standard Swiss 7.5x55. It will take standard Swiss ammo though and shoot it very accurately to boot. The problem comes in if want to reload. Hornady and Redding so far have recongnized this and will make you a special sizer die. Make sure you get that and not the standard 7.5X55 Swiss for reloading. Both comanies have quoted me $62.00 plus shipping.
I have no idea about the Mosin-Nagant except I have heard they shoot pretty good also.

I understand there is only one type made...it is classed as a carbine-rifle...even though it is longer than some main battle rifles. That is the way I understand it.
I have heard varying things about Swiss rifles. In studying my K-31 I would say the action is very strong...as opposed to the 1896's which I know to be not as strong. Some question remains to me as to how strong the 1896/1911's are. People more versed in them than me can answer that. The standard load (GP11) is a 174 gr. bullet pushed at 2640. I chrono'd mine at 2700 in the 90 degree heat we've been having here in MN a couple weeks ago. That's a 100-150 fps lower than a 30-06 at max loads. They were pretty consistent too. Only 11fps difference in 20 rounds.
Also, in a later post someone mentioned that Swiss ammo is expensive. It is! The best deal I can find on it is $.40 a round if you buy in 480 rd. lots. Shipping on top of that. I can reload good surplus quality for about $.20 a round. But a rifle for $130.00-$250.00 makes up for a lot of that. Dies will be somewhat expensive for that though.
Mine was made in 1951. I'm sure that there were some improvements from before WWII to post WWII in metalurgy so that may make a difference if you buy. -Good luck

I have a M-44 Moisin Nagant carbine with an 8X POSP scope mounted. See photo.
I fire military surplus non-corrosive and Wolf 7.62x54R ammo. I have not been able to attain sub-MOA groups with this combination. My best has probably been three inches. I may get that down if I can handload some decent ammo. My shooting partner has a M1891 Mosin Nagant rifle with iron sights and this rifle will not shot sub-MOA either. I am not saying that all of the Mosin Nagants can't shoot MOA, but they need some work to do so.
I have never shot the K 31 but I think Sandwarrior is correct with his recommendation as I have read the K 31 is one of the best deals available on the surplus market, especially when it comes to accuracy. I have read that the K 31 action is not necessarily the strongest, but that shouldn't matter as long as the rifle is left in its original caliber. The Swiss are meticulous about mechanical devices and this rifle is supposed to reflect the high quality precision manufacturing the Swiss are known for.

Both are great guns with both having their faults and merits the swiss is more accurate but ammo is priced awful high ,the mosin's on average will shoot about 2-4 in at 100m some more some less and the ammo is dirt cheap with much more variety of loads to chose from ,if you ever wanted to scope them the mosins alot easier too , so my 2 cents worth are to pick a mosin !!!! 0
