best large caliber?

Hey everyone what is the best africa-sized cartrige out there above, say .375? I know there are quite a few, some new magnums, some older than me, was just curious as to what you thought was the best considering availibility and reliability?

    How about a 416 Rigby or 460 Weatherby? Personally, since I'd be at the bottom of the food chain as soon as I got out of the truck, I'd feel more comfortable with a rifle that said "Barrett" on the side. Your results my vary[;)]

    If you searched for the rest of your life you would not find a rifle caliber that works for EVERYTHING like the old 375 H&H..Still the most popular of them all.However there are places that require larger calibers for elephant.Don't ask me why,beats me..That cartridge has killed thousands of elephants..Another case where the powers to be never held a rifle but are EXPERTS..An EXPERT is two words EX=has been,,SPERT=drip under pressure..I rest my case..modoc

    If you have a 12 gauge pump shotgun with a rifled barrel that is Acraglas gel & powdered steel into the receiver, then you have the most powerful rifle most anyone has ever seen.

    My two favorites... the .405 WCF... for anything smaller than an Elaphant or whale, or the .50 BMG (Robar makes a really cool bolt-action rifle in that cartridge) for anything that you really want to decimate[}:)][:D]

    I've never heard of a country that requires larger than the 375H&H or euripion 9.3x64 as a minimum.
    That said, are you looking for "best" for hunting or "best" stopping (there is a difference) 416Rigby, 500Jeffries, 500AHR, 600NE, 700NE, 577Nyati, 577 T-Rex, 600 Overkill, 404Jeffries, 458Lott, 375/404 the list is long and everyone has there favorates.

    Tailgunner got it right! The list is long...that said my choice would be a 416 Rigby...and there are a bunch of cartridges that are far more powerful. Beach

    Based on the way that you asked the question:

    "...was the best considering availibility and reliability?"

    As far as availability and reliability, it would have to be the .375 H&H and the 500 Jeffery just for Buffalo.

    I would take the .375 H&H or the 9.5 x 66 SE vom Hofe for everything except Buffalo. The .375's will work for Buffalo, I would prefer to have something a bit bigger and with more energy, along the lines of either the 500 Jeffery for bolt rifles or the 577 Nitro Express 3" for a double gun.
