Removing Silver Solder Residue from Barrel

Any suggestions? Willing to cold blue the area (about 1" x .5").

    A mild acid solution and electrolysis? Diluted sulfuric acid would probably be a suitable electrolyte to handle the lead and silver content

    Wire brush the Cr*p out of it. A dremel tool with a SST Brush.

    I was thinking the same thing except I figured the electrolysis wouldn't affect the machined finish of the gun as much. If you have lathe pattern except for a polish spot it might look funny. If it's inconspicuous then brush away[;)]

    It's a cut-down trapdoor barrel to make a carbine and someone silver-soldered a ramrod near the front sight. Don't know why. Had the gunsmith get it off but there is some residue left; don't want to take it back to him since he did it free. Will try the wire brush and then if necessary the dremel.

    Sorta clumsy with acids--particularly the last time I dropped some. [:D]

    I have only done it a couple times, used 0000 steel wool, seems to me the wire brush is too harsh and would leave scratches, and the dremel is good if you want the steel polished too.

    Hairy all you got to do is take some fine grit emory cloth and tear an inch wide strip about 8 or ten inches in length off. put the barrel in a padded vise with the part that needs fixing sticking out. use the strip just like a shoeshine rag . wrap it around the section and have at it. it will be clean and shiny and ready for the blue.

    If you put a LITTLE heat to it this will make the solder sfter and it will come right off. Do it all the time with Mauser front sights

    try flat brass. it's harder than most solders and won't hurt your barrel. i used a 308 case with the mouth flattened in a vice to remove
    soft solder from around a sight and it worked pretty well. anything harder i can't say.

    Sulfuric acid will not dissolve silver. Ammonia will, but it's slow. Ammonia won't hurt the steel. Acids will.

    Before this happens again,next time take a piece of welders chalk and put it where you don't want the solder to stick. works like magic....
    As far as removel, heat it up a bit, and #0000 steel wool will wipe the most of it right off.

    Gun control is hitting what your aiming at.

    Diluted acid will have little effect on it. By applying a little current to the mix the silver should react with the solution to form hydrogen, and silver sulfate soluted in water IIRC. H2SO4+AG2--->H2+AG2SO4
