.375 x 64

I have a gun with a barrel stamped .375 x 64 J.T.L. The bolt face is the same size as a 30-06. A cerrosafe casting has shown that the case has a diameter of .505 at the bottom and slightly tapers all the way up to the shoulder. It is a massive casting. Any help on dies, what type of brass to use or who to contact for further info would be great. Additionally, the barrel is hexagonal.

    From that basic description, it sounds like the 9.3 x 64 Brenneke that has been opened up to take .375 bullets. It would be an easy necking up since 9.3mm translates to 0.366". You would have to turn the rim down slightly and then deepen the extractor groove but that's fairly simple. The J.L.T., I have no idea except to say that it's probably the gunsmith's or his client's initials.

    These conversions were popular when it was hard to get 9.3 bullets and the selection of .375's has always been very good. However, the brass to make this cartridge is only becoming available recently in the U.S. through Natchez Shooters Supply.

    At $24.08/20 pcs. it ain't cheap. But it is RWS and is considered to be some of the very best in the world and it will last a long time as long as you load reasonably.

    If not, locate a set of 9.3 x 64 Bushing Neck Sizing dies and change out the bushing for one that accommodates the neck of your chamber. It may be possible to fireform cases but you need to check everything as far as dimensions are concerned, very carefully!

    The hexagon (6 sided) is a little unusual because octagons (8 sided) are more common.

    Not with a head diameter of 0.505" as stated above:

    Thank you Geri! This sounds like it coul be the case except for the rim diameter. The face of the bolt is set up to take a 30-06 size rim.
    I spoke to a person by the name of Stan at RCBS and he was baffled. I'm now sending him my cerrosafe casting for further analysis. I hope I can identify it as it is a very cool looking rifle of a substantial caliber. If not, I may post it on gunbroker and let someone with more time track this one down.
