Help for a LEFTY

My 15 year-old son is 15, 5'11", 170 and is ready to move up from his 30/30 Marlin. He is left handed and is saving to buy a new/used rifle for deer and elk (Oregon country).

I need help with identifying the make/model of a rifle that is:
1. Left handed
2. Bolt action (preferred)
3. Strongly prefer a DETACHABLE CLIP
4. Strongly prefer .270, but 30-06, .280, 7 mm are ok too. Not too interested in the magnums.

We've closely reserached Savage, which has a good line-up of left handed bolts, but NONE have the detachable clip (only RH do)

Do any posters know of an affordable make that has a detachable clip on left handed models?

    Off the top of my head I can not think of a lefty that has a detachable clip unless the Tikka line has one.

    Actually Browning may make one also.

    I am a lefty as well and have purchased a Browning A Bolt Stainless Stalker in a 270. I also have a Ruger in a 7mm Mag. and a Savage in a 22-250. I hunt big game mostly with the Browning and varmits with the 22-250. It is a great gun. I don't know of any with a detachable clip. I have searched for left handed bolt rifles and let me tell you the selection is limited and most of the time I've had to special order. I just ordered a Benelli M2 in left handed and I was told I had to wait 6 months (will not have it for Dove [:(]. Good luck in your search.

    I have a Browning A-bolt that is lefty in .270 WSM. It has the detachable clip. I did have to wait a couple of weeks to get it though. I usually look for lefty rifles in stores but seldom see any.

    I guess I should clairfy. The Browning has a latch on the bottom next to the trigger guard that when released it will drop down and expose the clip, which then can be taken off. After reloading it has to be placed back on the slide and the latch closed. It is not necessarly a clip that can be pushed into the rifle after reloading. Hope this helps. [:D]

    If you can find one, look at the Model 788 Remington left hand .308. I have had one for years. They have a removeable magazine.

    You're right I have a .244 Rem. left hand Rem 788 I forgot all about I also have two older left hand Savages one was 30/06 I re barreled it to 6.5x55 the other is a .243 both have removable mags.[:)]

    Well I hope this is a on going forum for all the lefties.

    I to had a hard time finding a LH bolt for myself. Just so happened that I found one at local gun show and traded my SIG 226 with two 15rds mags.
    Ended up with a Browning A Bolt II in 270WSM... It is a fine shooting rifle, but does have a kick to it. A young man might enjoy the kick but if a Browning A Bolt in 7mm-08 could be found it would be a lot more friendly. I hunt with several guys that use them on 150-200 deer and the Hornady 139 ballastic drops them in there tracks most of the time.

    Affordable means different things to different folks. Being a lefty doesn't give your son as many choices as we righties get. But I think if you look into this you might see this as a viable alternative.

    Detachable MAGAZINES didn't achieve much favor in the U.S. with the average hunter and shooter so they are few and far between. Left handed ones are even fewer. A fairly easy way to get what you want is to find and buy a used Remington 700 BDL LH which are relatively available and then get an HS Precision Detachable Magazine Conversion from either HS or Brownells. Switch out the BDL magazine and put in the HS magzine. Simple as that.

    If you ever consider a semi-auto the Browning BAR works great as a lefty rifle.
