Thinkin' about a Mini-Thirty

Good? Bad? Should I look for an older one or new? One ad claimed that this is the most accurate 7,62x39 auto rifle. True? I'm thinking that this would be a good starter rifle for NRA High Power. Cheap to practice with. When I get to the point where I think I'm outshooting the gun I'll move up.Thoughts?

    the ak varients are more reliable and cost less. Look at a SAR-1. My 2 cents [8D]

    Ge the USA made Mini 30. I have owned several 14s and a couple of 30s with no problems. imo. nambu

    FUG, I own many Rugers, but not a Mini-30 and this is why. About 10 years ago a friend of mine bought one new and we took it to the range and at 100 yds it grouped about a 7" group (with a scope). He was pleased with the accuracy and said it was about par for the gun and cartridge. It was a nice looking, reliable gun, but my $99 Norinco SKS is just as, if not more, accurate and it was about $350 less. I'm not sure who said it was the most accurate 7.62X39 auto available, but I have never seen one that can outshoot my $99 SKS.

    Mini 14/30 are well made reliaible rifles but as far as accuracy goes a sks with a good barrel will shoot just as well ,and youll only spend 100-200 dollars which you can use to buy extra ammo with the savings.... as far as a rifle for any kind of competition shooting ,on the cheap get a mosin 91/30 with a good barrel and give it a try ,thats how i started .mine shoots avg.425 on a 50 rd. match

    NRA high power is shot at 200, 300 and then 600 yards (slow Prone) It is a great sport. You would be better off shooting almost any good bolt action rifle over the Mini-30. It simply is not able to produce the basic accuracy needed for competition.

    Remember, competition is a good place to learn the art of the sport but the object is still to win. Getting the least costly, yet competitive firearm you can afford is good. Showing up at a ball game with a golf club won't work.

    The mini 30 has about the same balistics as the 30-30. No long range caliber of course. STILL, loke the mini 30 over the SKS, resale value will make up the difference in price,,imo..nambu

    It is important not to confuse the 14 with the 30. An SKS is going to be far more accurate and have a cheaper price tag. The carbine barrel really limits the mini 30 for far distance accuracy but if you shot it enough who knows.

    Thanks for the input guys. I'll reconsider buying one for comp purposes.
    Select Fire, why is the Mini Thirty not allowed for High Power? I've seen Mini 14's used (albeit in the mid 80s) for these matches. Does the list of disallowed guns include the SKS and AKs?
