I took your advice on how to list a shotgun and it sold. Thank you! thank you! thank you! Can I ship a long gun via usps priority service, or does it have to go overnight like handguns?

    Hello misskelly: Yes you can ship long guns via USPS Priority Mail, to the manufacturer or an FFL holder. You might want to talk with the Post Master ahead of time to make sure they are up to speed. All you have to do is show them the copy of the FFL your buyer sent you. It's best to remove the barrel, to keep the package as short as possible. When left in the "long" configuration butt stocks have a tendancy to get broken. I always have them stmp FRAGILE and DO NOT DROP, insure it!! The average 12 ga should cost you about $20-$30. depending on if you are going coast to coast, or less. (Insurance of less than $1000.)     An individual mailing a long gun does not need to tell anyone at the post office that the package contains a firearm. USPS has a list of 4 questions that they ask concerning any package (e.g., "Is it fragile?" "Is it hazardous?" etc), but a long gun without ammunition can be shipped without answering "yes" to any of them.

    Declaring or stamping it "fragile" will only invite unwanted scrutiny. If you don't know how to package it so that there is no possibility that it will be damaged, take it to a shipping store & pay them to pack it.

    pack it like it was a really fragile item , and make sure you get some kind of delivery comfirmation on it ,,

    you can ask the buyer if they would like to spend a few bucks more to have it shipped in a hard case, they are really out nothing because they get to keep the case and its a better way to ship without worring about damage

    Is it a freqent thing for long guns to get beat up in the mail. I would have thought that they'd do okay. I have been shipping balsa wood airplanes lately and had no problem, but maybe I was being watched out for.
