Loose sling swivel post -- how to fix it?

On my new Marlin 883 it has the sling swivel posts in place. The top one was too close to the stock to attach the sling, so I screwed it out a bit. Now it will not tighten or come out.

Fix at home or to a smith?

    Do you mean it won't unscrew out of the stock? If you can remove it a small washer can be put behind it. Uncle Mikes swivel kits come with a little white plastic spacer for that. If you can't get it out of the stock that would indicate that:1 the threads are stripped out of the wood or 2 there is a metal nut inside the stock that is turning with the stud. The nut can be glued in after seperating the action from the stock. You will still need the spacer. If it is a wood screw with stripped threads it will pull out sooner or later dropping your rifle.

    I think it must be a nut turning as even though it is loose it will not pull out.

    Hey Plains if this is the stud on the fore end chances are that it has a captive nut that is now turning loose in the wood. Pull the whole gun out of the stock and take a look, some of these thread into a knurled nut that just gets friction from the wood on the knurling to hold it in place. Probably just slipped a little and you can get on it with needle nose pliers and hold it while you tighten the other side. Add that washer for a spacer while you are at it like Mobuck suggested.

    Large hammer, baling wire, and duct tape. You can fix anthing with these. Sometimes you need a bigger hammer for tough jobs. Seriously, Snellstrom has the solution for you in his post.
