recoil reducers?

just put a new butt stick on a model 101 winchester. this stock seams to let the gun kick a little harder. but it fits. i shot a friends kreigoff with a reducer and it didnt kick at all. im wondering what kind mercury or solid metal piston type. and manufacture that yall might recomend. brownells has about 6 different manufactures. and the different piston types.

    I have used Edwards Recoil reducers with good effect. They contain no mercury, are out of sight in the butt stock.

    There are a number of considerations to reduce the felt recoil of shotguns, some having more effect than others.

    If this is a field shotgun then just adding weight to the gun reaches a diminishing return very quickly in that you must lug around all that additional weight all the time. If it is a trap gun then weight doesn't matter (but balance does).

    Other things that the K gun has that the Win gun may not is over sized bore. Some argue this benefit, and also argue porting as a benefit. But there are others that will say they are a benefit. And I am one of those that argue that oversize bore and porting are an aid to felt recoil reduction.

    If your really sensitive to recoil than I highly recommend the Soft Touch recoil reduction by Shooters Emporium. I just had one installed and it really tames recoil.

    thanks alpine. this is a diamond grade trap oversingle with porting. i went from a monte carlo stock to a lower comb stock. it has the hole already cut in the stock for the reducer. and yes now that you mention it the k did have a longer forcing cone. ive never shot with a reducer until then. i might have just let one go off with out the stock mounted good. as one got my attention. but the rest seemed to bang just a touch harder. same load ive used for 30 years. wondering if it would be worth the price of the reducer.

    Edwards are about $40. But you should really look into the Soft Touch. It will keep you from ever having to go to a release trigger.

    Mercury reducers do work but a couple of things. 101's tended to have more drop in their stock which can increase felt recoil. If you think the comb height is right the question is....are you getting cheek slap or straight back recoil that is or seems harder. Minor adjustments in comb height and thinning the stock where the cheek rests helps. Minor adjustments to the stock pitch can make the recoil come straight back as opposed to a rising kick. The mercury reducer will also change the balance point a bit but that often is a good thing. I sott a 101 trap for years but I can't remember it's balance point. Ideally i think the bulk of the weight should be between the hands with a slight muzzle heaviness.
