Beretta 92FS Rear Sight Removal?

Hi,

I have a Beretta 92FS 9mm and recently purchased adjustable rear sights for it. I had read that the factory rear sights can be knocked out fairly easy using a brass punch and hammer. Well I've been banging away and can't get the thing to budge. Any suggestions for something else I can try? I tried looking up a tool for this and the only one I can find was sold by Midland and is now discontinued. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks

    Most gunsmiths have a sight pusher. It's probably cheaper to have someone else move the sight then buy a sight pusher and do it yourself.

    Are you using any kind of pennitrating oil before trying to move the sight? It might help.

    The machined notch in the top of the slide is made so that it is tapered from one side to the other. I have forgotten which side is the "Narrow" side, but if you are unable to get it to slide out, you are probably tapping on the wide side driving it into the narrower notch. Try hitting it from the other side. It might take a little extra if you have pounded it in really tight. It comes out fairly easy if driven from the "narrow" side of the notch towards the wider portion. Good Luck!

    I second it, use a nylon punch and a pistol block or you will mark it up very easy, and the new sight must be fitted do not try to pound it in measure it and fit it in properly, you may have to take a bit of with a file

    I may be wrong but I thought most sights push out to the right. Anybody confirm?

    I just took off a set of Wilson combat night eyes and put on a novak adjustable, looking from the rear of the gun they would go to the left for removal {.0035 diference}, I also just had a Springfield dove tailed front and rear with matching sites as my competition gun

    Thanks for the suggestions guys. I just got in from work so I'll give some of these a try in the morning. I did read that the sight should be hit on the right side and pop out the left if you were holding the gun as if you were going to shoot it. I've been doing this so the first thing I'm going to try is the penetrating oil. If this doesn't work I may just take it to a gunsmith and have him do it. I don't want to get too frustrated and get carried away with the hammer :)

    Thanks guys for the help. The penetrating oil did the trick. I let it soak in the stuff for a good 12 hours and was able to knock the sight out in 5 minutes. It was actually harder getting the new sight on :)
