    7mm Shooting Times Western, its an 8mm Remington Mag necked down to 7mm. Really hot 7mm cartridge used for hunting.

    The 7mm STW is a great long range caiber. With the right scope and a lot of practice 600 yard killing shots are possible. There is a little recoil so I would suggest a muzzle brake and or Sims recoil pad if you do much bench shooting. This caliber is really accurate and is hard to beat for game anywhere in N. America

    Are you aware of the cartridge sizes that fit in the standard pattern 98 Mauser?

    This is one of the cartridges that the 98 Mauser was made to feed, the 8x57 as an example. Take a look at the drawing:

    Brass length = 2.244"
    OAL w/bullet = 3.228"
    Rim Diameter = 0.470"

    Now here is the 7 STW:

    Brass length = 2.850"
    OAL w/bullet = 3.650"
    Rim Diameter = 0.532"

    This is if you own a military 98 Mauser. The commercial 98's had different boxes that were available for longer cartridges. But cartridges like the 375 H&H and the 7 STW require some extensive work to the receiver and a new box.

    I might add that it is likely headed for obsolesence. The cartridge was standardized only a couple of years prior to the introduction of the much hotter 7mm Rem Ultra Mag. It now fills a void between the 7mm RM and 7mm RUM; a void that most people can't see. That, coupled with the fact that the guns must be special, ordered is going to relegate this cartridge to the same group as it's parent cartridge.

    I would not suggest anyone with an STW go trade it in on a 7mm RUM but, on that same token, the 7mm RUM is going to be a better bet for a new purchase. As the hottest commercially-loaded 7mm (except for the Lazzeroni 7.21 Firebird, a proprietary round), the 7mm RUM has a bright future ahead of it. I don't think we can say as much for the STW.

    Save the seals-club a liberal instead.

    My favorite 7mm to put in a standard surplus length M98 action is the great 280Rem or the wildcat version, the 7mm-06. My take on the various super 7mmMags is that after you get out past the new short mags and the venerable 7mmRemMag the rest start to get really overbore real fast or are propriatary & needlessly expensive. Personally I won't shoot at big game animals out past 300yds as I don't want to give a wounded buck anymore of a head start then that. Any of the above 7mm will make that shot with minimal recoil and waste of of powder.
