458 barrel blank

Howdy again. Hope all are well. I have a 27" 458 cal. barrel blank made by Bill Hobaugh. I've heard he was a fine barrel maker. Can anyone suggest what it would cost to have this blank totally finished. This would include everything, threading it, chambering it in 458 Mag or Lott, polishing it, bluing it, crowning it, fitting it to my Rem. 700 action, removing the short barrel on it now. I'm kinda scared to ask, but I'm dying to have it done. Also, will it be worthwhile to have a barrel in these calibers as long as 26" or am I overdoing it? Thanks, as always for your input! Barry L. By the way, I'm mainly looking for accuracy, as I rarely hunt but love to shoot big bores.

    Scary, The development costs for my 505-460 Kemp built on a Swiss K31 were as follows:
    barrel (old surplus in 505 but unchambered)....$150
    Swiss K31 in good condition.....................$160
    Chamber reamer (made to my spec).................$180
    custom dies for 505-460 Kemp spec................$185
    Fitting of barrel and reaming, cutting bolt face..$275
    Blueing and providing sights and recoil pad.......$175
    Total
    $1125
    I used the old Mil stock with a generous amount of my rework so I could at least save a few bucks until proven.
    The bottom line is ... When stoking the fires of the big bores, lots of muscle in the form of cash is a requirement. Still, it is a blast (literally) to run a 500 grain projectile downrange. Wish we still had some 16 inch guns in service!

    stan, I appreciate the info. I figure I'm gonna spend most of my life savings on this thing, but it is a 1964 model Safari Grade, and I think worth the trouble. It came from the Custom shop with a 20" tube that is a real bruiser with 500 gr. bullets, and simply cannot be shot off a bench at all. I figure the more weight I get out in front of me, the less punishment I'll be taking. Also, 300 grain bullets are a pleasure to shoot, but, I'm still looking for more accuracy at longr ranges.     Sounds like a good barrel and I know for a fact that if you put it on a Rem 700, it will be a great gun. I would suggest that you contact Montana Rifleman in Kalispell, MT and they can Help. I have personnally built a number of customs (have done for years) and I have used barrels from MT Rifleman for about the past 10 years. I know that if you contact them they can help you. Chambering, contouring and crowning should be less than you might expect.
    I would also advise that you go to no more than 24" on the length. The 458 is an impressive caliber but is best suited for ranges up to around 300 yds. With the right powder / bullet combo, you can obtain optimum performance without the added weight and cumbersome swing of a 26" tube.

    lowelc, glad to hear from you. Since you're a new member, welcome. These folks have given me a wealth of information when I needed it. Thanks for the info you offered also. I will certainly contact the folks you mentioned. I'm ready to get this project on the road! I believe you're right. I don't see any guns in 458 Mag. over 24", so that is probably the most practical length. Thanks again, and happy shooting! Barry

    If the outfit D.K. mentions can do it for $200 for a chamber, thread, crown, contour and maount, that is one really good deal. From my experience, I would expect it to be more around $400. Best of luck and keep a straight aim!

    You been payin way too much, buddy!

    Dave just rebarrelled my short actioned Ruger
    with an air-gaged Douglas and lapped the lugs and
    squared the action face. He furnished the barrel
    and returned my old barrel all for around $300.00.

    Dave does good work....has done about 16 barrels for
    me over the last 20-25 years. His bead-blast blueing is
    real hard to beat too!

    Maybe so??? Being on the West Coast, I hate to send things too far away. I.T.&D sounds kike a great place and if you have good success with them, it is the place to keep doing business. I have had some hard luck with shipping firearms in the past few years. One of them was headed to Idaho and was found on a train car in North Carolina. The other was headed to me in Oregon and ended up in New Jersey. I guess it's just a thing I have about going too far East. Don't get me wrong, if I had the experience with I.T.&D, I'd definnetly go with them. The only thing I was referring Barry to is what I have personal experience with. I know that there are plenty of "custom" builders out there and you have to stay with what works for you. I would like some info on your contact because being a custom gunsmith myself, I am always looking for the best deal for my customers. Thanks for the heads up.
